Same here. I knew going into it that 1st rifle has been 100% draw odds but the change with CO entry got me a little nervous about not getting a tag. You planning a scouting trip before the hunt?

I might be able to sneak away in September but likely won’t be able to scout.

Colorado 2017 Harvest Reports are out and numbers look to be way down in gmu521. Previous years in 1st rifle was a 40% success rate and 2017 had a 19% success rate. I put in for 1st rifle this year. Curious to know why such a drop in harvest success...previous years show the herd to be trending up, so was weather a factor, or????? It's kind of disappointing to see these numbers like this.

Anyone have and thoughts, input, or can shed some light on the situation?
Summer like weather during the rifle seasons is a culprit. We’ve been in a five year drought prior to this last winter. It’s not been proper elk hunting weather.

Hi jarred

Ok so 521 is a tough unit to hunt. I've been all over Colorado and that's definitely one of the toughest units just for the fact of the hunters that go there. If you do end up coming out to Colorado try and stick closer to units 52 almost on the line from 521 and 52. I was in 52 a few years back and we saw a bunch of elk crossing from both units. I know there's bulls in there I've got one hanging on the wall. You'll have to put the work in that's for sure. Or if you can get close to some private land and wait for them to cross over. Specially during rifle it might be a little cold if not snowing. We had a mild winter the last few years here in Colorado so my guess is that the weather come this fall will be nasty (I hope). If you do have any further questions you can always give me a call and we can help you out with some more information. My plan is to go to the unit just south of there in Gunnison 54
Ever hunted thousand acre flats in unit 521? I’m heading there in a week for archery. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Phone is 636-359-9889

I stayed a couple days in 521 chasing mule deer.. had an Elk tag in a close unit but decided to camp with some buddies that hunt 521.. I was there last year opening weekend.. there were 5 times as many people this year.. every bend in the road had a camp set up.. I rode all over 521 looking for a deer to hunt.. I found a couple but people were walking all over the unit.. I don't know if it is because everyone is off for covid . Or Saved their vacation for this time of year because they were already off most of the year or what.. The game warden I talked to said he's never seen so many people in the woods.. Maybe it will calm down by rifle season.. but it's tag soup for me this year..

As long as it’s a legal bull I don’t believe too many people are worrying about antler scores in CO otc units.

Used to live in Gunnison/ CB. Used to be an ok unit for a quick after work archery hunt. Not anymore, that unit is totally over run. Sheep, hunters, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback tourists everywhere. Got put on blast by Eastman's a half dozen years ago, and then people started posting specifics about where to hunt in open forums. It hasn't been good in years. We take a trip over Kebler every year to look at the Aspens changing, it's a total zoo. Buddy hunted it during the OTC seasons a few times, said he saw more mountain lions (2), and hunters (dozens) then elk. Camps everywhere. Dozens of vehicles at the access points. Don't waste your time.
