First Rifle for Western Hunting- what would you do?

If you're going to be using factory ammo it sounds like you need a 270 win.

Western hunting usually includes some large animals like elk. It also requires shooting at longer distances. Shot placement is key, but sometimes the perfect shot is not always made. I think a .300 wm is a great option or go with .300 wsm for something a little more compact.

Sounds like a kimber in 30-06 or 280ai might meet your needs. I found a used kimber Montana 84L 30-06 for less than a grand this spring. Not saying that's a deal you're going to find around every corner but I did so it's possible.
