I’m looking into what to do for my first hunt next year - planning to DIY backpack in CO for a week. I really like the idea of experiencing the rut during bow season but also wonder if that type of hunt will be too much to bite off in our first attempt. The units I’m looking at are also OTC for 2nd and 3rd rifle, and while I can see it being slightly less difficult for us tactically (could be wrong here though) I worry about the pressure and weather in late October. At the end of the day I know the odds of success are low so I just want the best/safest/most educational experience for this first foray. What advice do y’all have?

Success rates are usually higher with rifle. The rut is amazing to hear. Many guy go archery for their first elk hunt and it's possible with preparation. The weather is normally nicer in September. You have to personally weigh the pros and cons.

Decide if success is most important and if so rifle if want to experience the rut and pleasant weather go archery. Either way you will enjoy and go back for more👊

I went with a rifle for my first hunt, do not regret it. If you have never been around elk, having one come into archery range could be overwhelming especially during the rut.

The weather is unpredictable for any of your choices. Your physical conditioning is the most important factor. You can get away from hunting pressure if your tough enough. Just like the elk.

IMO everything is easier in September versus later, especially backcountry camping and carrying a big heavy pack on your back. Sure, you can run into some really nice days in October but it will be colder overall, which means more clothes and maybe even a heat source.

Then throw in the hunting aspect......if they aren't still bugling for rifle, then you have to "hope" to find them and with pressure comes nocturnal elk. During archery they tell you where they are, and not only that......they actually come to you.

IMO it's a no-brainer. If I hadn't been LH and 32 1/2" draw, I would have started bowhunting decades ago.
