Fire: Whats your comfort level?

There's a lot of factors to take into consideration like how big of a fire, how dry are the conditions, which way are the winds blowing the fire, and what elevation are you hunting compared to the fire. Best bet would be to stay well clear of the fire as all the activity around the fire will probably push most the animals away not to mention the chances of a small seemingly harmless fire can turn into a monster before you know whats happening. As a guy that has had to run from a fire or two and have seen how fast a fire can travel I would stay away. Trees crowning and exploding around you tends to not be the funnest thing to do in the woods.

I don't like to be close to them at all. I've seen them in action and it is a pretty scary sight. If conditions are right they can move up to 7 miles an hour. The wind gets to whipping toward you and it starts crowning like said above, it could be on top of you before you decided you need to leave.

True wildfire I stay away controlled burn or fire burning in a controlled fashion I will hunt it. Killed a bull within hundreds of yards in 09 and when packing it out I had the snap crackle pop of trees smoldering was eerie hearing all that popping going on...labeled him the smoke bull👍 Two years ago they were doing controlled burns dropping little fire starters and we had bulls screaming in the area several days later.

I was setting up camp yesterday and wasn't even comfortable with the fires being 1000+ miles away, with all the smoke in the air. My throat is raw today and my eyes are burning. We need a big change in the jetstream here. Push this stuff back to the north. But as for actual flames........I hunt so much deadfall I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a fire while hunting.

Yea it's been a brutal summer smoke wise. Here's Jolly Mountain from about a mile north...
