Fire Boots

Whites, nicks.
A lot of buddies wear Scarpa. I'm a leather guy.

Stay away from La Shitvas. Might be good for mountaineering but don't hold up to firefighting.

I would buy another pair of Nick's any day. If I ever wear out the ones I have. I am not doing the fire gig anymore.

Been wearing Hawthorns since 1999. I'm on my second pair, been thru a lot of fires and TONS of miles hiking cruising timber.

I doubt the sizing would line up, but if your interested in used, I could probably part with my nicks. They're 11.5 B width. Used one season for backcountry trail crew and fire on my days off and late in the fall. PM me if you'd like.

Looking at a lot of the White's/Haw/Wesco, etc., most/all have the high heel. I saw White's explanation on anatomy as to why, but are there any with a low rise? I'm a clumsy fool... and prefer lower rise boots. Or is there another reason why to go with the higher heel?

Probably just a little too narrow for me.

If you want a lower rise then go with Wesco for sure. They build a flatter sole boot with lower heels. Really it is personal preference as to what you like and also the anatomy of your foot. I have a higher arch so I prefer the taller heels of the Nicks.

White's made an all leather water proof liner insulated (400 gram) and un-insulated hunting boot with a low hiking boot type heel. Have had mine for about 4 years now and they are good for hunting, but the smoke jumpers are better for brush work... only had 3 sets in my career in the fire service (27 years) and still have and use my last set.

2 pairs of Whites smokejumpers lasted me 21 years. Well worth the money. I am pretty sure if you get the brown ones they will be black by the end of your first season in the , so I would go with the black. My .2cents
