Less then a month to go till my first archery elk hunt. It'll be OTC DIY 10 days backcountry elk hunt. I've got everything I think I'll need but my question to the Pros is what am I missing? What is a random piece of gear that most new hunters don't realize they need until on the hunt? Something out of the ordinary that y'all have found to be helpful that most newbies don't think of?

I'm a newbie too, but I'd make sure to have:

chapstick
Leukotape for blisters
I like a neck strap for my sunglasses.

Apply the leukotape before you even leave the vehicle. If you noticed any hotspots during training hikes, cover those areas with tape. A small bottle of whiskey is nice for a pull or two in the evenings. When combined with Advil PM it'll knock you right out ;)

Bring lightweight camp shoes. Nice to lose the boots after a long day.

I bet it's more likely that you need to bring less stuff than you think you need. I don't pack any of the things mentioned thus far.

Except TP

Yes I've got a pair of camp shoes that weigh 8oz. Nice to wear at night around camp. Cost about $ 9 at wally world. Had everyone stealing mine last year.😀

To each their own I guess. There are a lot of luxuries I can live without for a week or so. Especially if that means half a lb lighter. It all adds up. Saw someone mention their pack weight was 85lbs.... Mine is in the mid 20s.

A fresh application of water proofer on the boots and gaiters.
A few packets of gas station hot sauce, mustard, mayo, etc always helps bring a little life to dehydrated meals.
A small microfiber cloth to clean optics with.

Lots of good advice, several items I have already one or two I hadn't thought of or slipped my mind. Can't wait only a couple weeks to go!
