No Chapstick and no tape. I've brought them before and never used either.

I'm curious if you carry the ten essentials? Although I've never used Chapstick (sun protection) I have used tape (first aid, repair kit) several times.

Just because I've never used something doesn't make it non essential. I have a whole ditty bag, a little over 1#, that rarely gets opened but when it does I'm very grateful for it.

p.s. If you don't that's cool. Everyone asses risk differently. I'm just curious.

If you've ever hunted elk in the high country or mulies in the desert, you would PAY $20 for some chapstick on ohhhh about day 3 of your hunt.

I guess I don't know what you mean by 10 essentials. And yeah I've been to the high country and the desert both.

You have to bring what makes you happy but I was just pointing out that you don't really NEED a lot of things.

Extra pair of shoes on a backpack hunt?
I take a pair of crocs. Light weight, dry fast, great for crossing larger streams or just letting your feet air out while glassing or at camp.

10 essentials for outdoor hiking and backpacking

Navigation
Sun protection
Insulation
Illumination
First-aid supplies
Fire
Repair kit and tools
Nutrition
Hydration
shelter

You can google this and find out more. Obviously your list may very from others because yours needs will be different but these should be in pretty much everyones pack no matter where they hunt.

There is also the 5 C's of Survival which covers some of the list above.

• Cutting device
• Combustion device
• Cordage
• Container
• Cover

Another good one to study up on.

Hope this helps.

I have some chapstick in my first aid kit, but I don't think I've ever used it on a hunt before, and I'll hunt 20+ days in September in a normal year at, above, or near 11k feet.

Over the years I have dealt with chafe a few times and now I always carry some kind of anti-chafe product. I typically pack very light and don't bring nearly as many "what if" items as some guys but I have found that this is one thing that can ruin my trip.

Chapstick comes in handy for us Easterner's heading out west. And sunscreen for is and important item. And I have to have something to deal with cuts. I am very accident prone.

Yes I've got a pair of camp shoes that weigh 8oz. Nice to wear at night around camp. Cost about $ 9 at wally world. Had everyone stealing mine last year.

I use crocs. closed toe, dont stay wet, weigh nothing. can hang off the side of a pack, after deploying/hunting with them, I wont backpack without them.

Same here Chops, nice to get your feet out of your boots around camp at the end of a long day.

In addition to your water filtration method, bring iodine tablets or aqua Mira. Weighs a couple ounces and will save ya if/when your filter breaks

a&d ointment. I was on a wildland hand crew for a few years and never left the buggy without this stuff. use it for chaffing. New to backpack hunting but not to hiking long distances and setting up a place to camp. Also some tenacious tape and super glue. Going on my first elk hunt this year as well good luck!!!

Same here, only mine are Cushy's. GODSEND for soar/hot feet.
Good for getting sneaky too.

Scent wipes.... face, pits crotch, ass.... new man.
Really helps things from getting funky.

A couple straws of Montreal Steak seasoning for tenderloin on a stick. I know it's not a nessessidy, but nice and weighs nothing.

A small glow stick to mark kill sites for night time pack outs. Some people also use reflective tape or tacks.

Got your citric acid for the kill kit... right?
Black pepper to keep bugs out of shelter.
