Final stages leaving for AZ Bull Elk hunt in Unit 6A

Well I am leaving Thursday for AZ for a solo Elk hunt in AZ Unit 6A. I have only had a previous Elk hunt in CO for a couple of days, but I crashed due to weather and fitness. So for the last year I have worked and planned everything using inputs from Rokslide and I feel like I am ready to rok! I am 51 and so this is a little late in life to become a new Elk hunter, but I'm in. I am not car hunting. I am going in and will be out in it for 8 days. . I am going to start in the Rattlesnake canyon area and will work my way up in elevation (Oklahoma is 600ft elevation, so I need a day or two to adjust). I feel I have the best gear and the best advice from everyone on this site. I can truly say this site has made a huge impact on my life since its inception. I have Tapatalk loaded on the phone and will try to publish updates starting on the weekend. I may need a little advice and or encouragement.

My mental state is to not quit, go until I find um and stick with them. I have a total a totally open mind and will adjust my tactics as needed. Being solo I can do what I want and go until I can't go anymore.

You gonna have good days and bad...Emotionally on a solo 8 day backpack bowhunt. Try to stay positive.....If your seeing lots of elk this of course will help morale. Be aggressive elk hunting!! dont think they are going to come to you and offer a perfect shot when your in them.....If you have a window/opportunity go for it! Be aggressive....When you get a shot opportunity concentrate on your shot routine....it will be a blurr after the fact....Hunt hard and go at your own pace....Good luck!!!

Its a mud bog up there after all the rain northern Az has been getting but it should still be a great hunt. Good luck and you'll do fine.

Yesterday evening and for six hours starting before light I went hard - nothing. Damn hot, packed up and moved from 6,000 feet to 8,000. Got stuck in the mud with my Fj Cruiser. Nice guy pulled me out. Jumped a spike and then while quickly setting up the tent in one hell of a lightning / thunderstorm I heard the greatest bugle right over the from my camp! One heck of a day!

Kicked up a nice bull >340 around 11:00am today he took off from about 30 yards, but I didn't see him until too late. Guess I'll hand around here

As trkyslr instructed I have been aggressive, I was mixing it up with a whole herd for over an hour today. There were two decent size bulls, but I couldn't get closer than about 75 yards. I put about 8 miles in today. Man this ain't whitetail hunting. Having fun though,

I just killed my AZ bull today, at 12:00 noon. Locate with calls, follow till they bed, sneak in and shoot one. This was the 4th bull I have a snuck up on in his bed in 2 days. I haven't gotten out of camp before 7 either. Chasing with calls has done nothing so I changed tactics.

Man I have been hunting harder than I ever have. I had 3 encounters yesterday. I had a herd coming in at about 15 yards but the lead cow turned in a direction that put her nose directly in line with my 5 day in the woods scent. There was a decent bull with them. No monster, but a shooter. The other encounters were on stalks and they got my play first. Today is bad, too windy. I'm keeping at it.
