Wind can be your friend if you can spot them. Much easier to put the sneak on in a heavy wind from one direction. Of course everything else is harder !
Well I didn't fill my tag, but I had a blast and I learned a lot. This was my first real Elk hunt and I had a lot of encounters. I felt fortunate (or maybe I learned a lot from you guys) as other hunters I talked to in the area didn't see a thing or very little. I am learning everything on my own with the help of what I read as I haven't found any hunting partners in my age category to hunt with. I feel very confident if that cow had not winded me, I would have definitely made a shot at the 10-15 yards range on one of the bulls. I loved this area and the hunt. It's not all lost. I leave for another week in CO Unit 44 next month for 2nd rifle. I will be going with my brother from PA. Won't be quite a backcountry hunt though, more like a roadside basecamp hunt. He isn't a convert to the backcountry thing.
One other comment, is all of my gear was flawless, that I owe entirely to the folks on this site. I spent the week chasing Elk and never once had to fight or think much about my gear. I appreciate the help folks.
