BTW, for fairness towards the author -- from what it sounds like in the story, he'd been trying to get into close range with a smaller gun for several days and couldn't ever close the distance to where he felt comfortable with the little gun without the dikdik spotting/windinf him, so eventually he gave up and went for a long range shot with his big gun.
