I have always put a natural density filter on my high end camera lenses to protect the objective. But never on a rifle scope. Given good glass is good glass, and expensive, is there a reason I’ve never heard of this? Do you put anything other than lens caps on to protect the objective lenses?

That I'm aware of, thread pitches and diameters vary between scope manufacturers (i.e. a 44mm objective diameter cap from one manufacturer does not necessarily fit that of another) - therefore there is no "market" for folks like Hoya, Tiffen, B+H, etc. to make them for that purpose.
