My sister is looking for a rifle to handle some longer range hunting, and wants something a little nicer. She cant quite handle the price tag of a gunwerks or similar, but shes not looking for something thats savage or ruger affordable either. Shes just under 5' tall. We stumbled on to the mini rogue from fierce, shorter lop which works for her, but i know fierce has been hit or miss in recent years. Is that just a oandemic thing and theyve cleaned up their act? If so, any advice on a similarly priced shorter lop rifle? The compact market isnt too big, it seems

or Tikka with a shorter LOP aftermarket stock. Not sure who offers LOP options outside of manners and mcmilllan for tikka stocks though?

I believe LOP constraints are often as much or more about head position for good interface with a scope as they are trigger arm/hand position related. If a rifle has a flexible scope mounting setup and a scope that can be mounted back farther with solid eye relief, one can get away with a longer LOP and still be comfortable/relaxed behind the gun. One example - I've seen people mention constraints getting their maven RS1.2 scopes mounted far enough forward for proper eye relief. To me that indicates it's a good option for those wanting a shorter LOP or who's eye/head position is usually further back on a stock.

I wouldn't be surprised if a rokslide special (tikka, rokstok, maven rs1.2) would work very well at min LOP. Most people are wanting to add LOP to that stock and wanting to push the scope forward. I'd assume one would want higher rings if their head is towards the back of that stock due to the aggressive negative comb. The grip is great for smaller hands as well.

I didnt know they had a compact! I am trying to get a stainless barreled action, which is why i didnt go with the tikka compact, the browning looks to be blued also, but otherwise a great looking option! I suppose we could go non stainless and just cerakote it

Tikka with a custom stock?

I'd buy a seekins and have the LOP modified.
The seeking is a possibility. The tikka route is something ill look into for her, too. Ive only shot tikkas rimfire, but ive heard very good things about their centerfires

Makes sense, long range shots need less drag on the bullet, so lets get rid of that pesky rifling. So maybe fierce is out then 😂

Well esteemed UT company says grooves in the bullet helps BC..

Check out Alamo Precision Rifles in the Dallas area. They are a custom rifle builder but also have some ready to ship rifles. I have a couple rifles that they built for me and they are excellent. About to get a 3rd one built. Give them a call and let them know what you are looking for

What do you mean by longer range hunting? And what animals is she planning to hunt?

The inevitable recommendation is to get a Tikka with a custom stock, but I am also a big fan of the CZ 527. And now that the CZ 600 has worked through some of its teething problems, it appears to be a potential option as well.

I'd take a look at the Weatherby 307 Alpine CT with that sweet Peak44 stock on it. I own 2 Fierce rifles and mine shoot well but my next rifle will most likely be that Weathersby.

I would not be comfortable with a mini-length cartridge (6.5 Grendel, 6mm ARC, 22 ARC, .223, etc.) at 650 yards, so that takes the CZ 527 off the table for me. But a short action cartridge such as 6mm CM, 25 CM, 6.5 CM, 7mm-08, etc. seems great for that. In terms of makes and models, my preferences are Tikka T3X, CZ 600, an old Sako, a Sauer 100, or possibly a Mauser.

When picking a rifle, my advice is to start with the bullet you want to use and a maximum effective range, then work back from there to find something that will put that bullet at your maximum range with enough impact velocity for the bullet to perform reliably. Then pick the action you deem the most reliable. Everything else can be changed once you have that sorted out.

For her size and what she is comfortable shooting well, around 6.5 prc is around where we are willing to go in terms or average felt recoil. The ballistics on the 143 eldx hornady box loads looks great, but i kinda like the way monolithics work better so will give the barnes lrx and hornady cx a try. Just wish they were a little heavier, into the 140s but should still be plenty good

Ruger Americans has a spacer you can remove from the stock, most chassis rifles have good lop adjustment as well.

I've had good luck with Bergara products in the past - this one may fit the bill for her

If you want to go custom, but not break the bank, you could do

One of these:

One of these:

Have Greg at SPR chamber and install the barrel for you ($375)

Get one of these:

For bottom metal, you could go BDL:

Or you could go Hunter style DBM:

Add the stock of your choice for another $800-900.

All in, you are looking at about $2600, which is a little more than the Mini Rogue, and a little less than the Seekins Element but is in the exact configuration that she wants.
