I’m looking at a second spotting scope. I currently have a Kowa 883 with a wide angle lens. Great spotter.
But looking at a second but would want a FFP with a reticle but have (zero) knowledge of such. I’ve read about different ones but wanted to hear from anyone that has first hand experience.

Thanks....

Vortex make a straight 30x or 20x ??eye piece with mil reticle or moa....fits the razor. If I had not bough an s2 that was the way I may have gone. But the allure of alpha view glass for less $$ was too great :)

US Optics used to make an observation device with reticle too.....they are bomb proof if you can find one, dont think they make it now.

Swaro do a spotter with an illuminated retcile too....big $$

There would be more I cant think of.

I’ve used the Swarovski STR 80. The reticle feature is designed really well. However, the glass quality is from the STS/ATS generation. The current generation of glass quality in the STX/ATX series is hard to give up. It depends on how much of a priority the reticle is to you. From my perspective, if you want the spotting scope primarily for hunting I’d give up the reticle and go STX/ATX. If you want it for primarily practicing long range shooting then go STR. In hunting scenarios with a shooter and spotter, I believe it’s better for the spotter to have a tripod mounted 15X binocular. Because their role entails more than calling second shot corrections and generally that’s better served with being able to use both eyes with a wider field of view.

The Leupold is good. Relatively small, tough and good enough optically.

I see Minox do one as well.....just found it at Eurooptic last night. It would be a hidden gem I bet.

I use a 1st gen razor with the fixed 30x MOA reticle and it is pretty nice for targets out to about 800. After that, I wish it had at least 40x with some sort of zoom and FFP. The problem scope companies are having is etching a reticle small enough for real high powers. If its FFP, the reticle has to be like microns wide since its on the FFP side. SFP or fixed power the reticle is a lot bigger.

I did pick up a vortex doubler that actually fits the 30x fixed eyepiece and I am going to try that this year for the 800+ yd targets and see if it helps at all.

I have a Bushnell Elite Tactical LMSS 8-40x60 spotting scope with the Horus H32 reticle. It is FFP. I use it for long distance shooting as my long range target rifle (Bergara HMR in 6.5 CM) wears a scope with a Horus 59 reticle (Burris XTR II 4-20). Having a spotting scope with a Horus reticle makes it very easy to spot for a shooter with a mil based Christmas tree reticle because instead of saying you are hitting a target left and 2 targets low you can give the exact amount in mils and almost ensure a second round impact since the shooter can then hold that same amount on their scope's reticle. i also like the scope because having a spotting scope that you can dial down to 8X is great on those days when the mirage makes even 30X power scopes hard to use. The glass is decent but not on the same level as my Meostar S2 spotter.
