Federal 6.5 Backcountry?

In these high pressure cases (nas3, alpha, BC alloy stuff), are they running higher charge weights to reach those pressures? Or similar charge weights but different powders that push the pressure higher?

Just saw this surfing the web

Looks like federal won a military contract that is going to use peak alloy in several chambers up to 50bmg.
Maybe there is going to be a nato spec 6.5cm + peak alloy?

It’s generally different burn rate powders from my laymen understanding. Similar if not the same charge weight

This in a 22 Creedmoor case, a TMK, along with the New Barrel Tech would be Nice !

So I can just keep shooting my prc and have basically the same thing, lol sure
True, not much advantage in dropping your 6.5PRC.....but for those of us with a 6.5Creed, this potentially unlocks some possibilities that have always carried significant tradeoffs.

More importantly IMO, this is also confirmation that Federal isn't afraid of peak cases in existing cartridges so I would expect ALOT of other +peak coming.

308, .30-06, 243, 7-08, 270, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc

lots of interesting possibilities

18" 308 1:8 with 212 borerider at .30-06 velocities is an interesting possibility.

or

243 112gr @ typical 90gr velocities.

7mm-08 with 175gr near 7Mag velocities?
Might be some liability putting 80k pressure 270/3006 in a 1940ish bolt gun. Probably limit it to "newer" cartridges to reduce liability

I just need 2700 fps out of my 16” 6.5CM. Struggling with current available powders to hit 2650 without heavy bolt lift. Curious does anyone see pressure signs on this primer. IMG_1846.jpeg

Apparently SOCOM is trying same thing with the M4 family - asking for a mew "M4" upper to run 5.56+ at higher pressures but want capability to also run current 5.56 ammo

That is definitely a possibility, but they are already saying 6.5 +Peak is not suitable for break-actions like the CVA. If they can do that kind of caveat, why not a "rifles made after 2010" or whatever makes the lawyers happy?

I’m curious to see what kind of powders you need to utilize to take advantage of the higher pressures. Do you just pick slightly faster powders that get 90%+ fill rates with 80k psi?

I believe they are mixing powders with different burn rates as samples and then making a powder off those % and chemicals. Likely what started Superformance powder as Hornady claims there are over 9 variants of it.

Kids: Mom, can we stop at the store and get a 6.5 PRC?

Mom: No, we have 6.5 PRC at home.

The 6.5PRC at home: Peak Alloy

I kid though, I seriously love this move, and I hope it works as well as they claim. The fact they are releasing this into a common caliber that is a little short on velocity and not something new is a really smart play. The "same velocity as a 24" 6.5 PRC with a 20" CM" is an awesomely wild claim.

Bring on the 6mm CM!

They don’t understand the Rokslide vortex they are about to open if they actually make a load with with 153 TMK.
Federal: hold my beer

Also loading 155 fusion tipped, 156 Berger elite hunter, 127 lrx and 130 terminal ascent
