My favorite hunting story is of an elephant hunter who had a clean shot a what appeared to probably be a legitimate 100 pound tusker. This occurred after much time, effort and money. And apparently it was already almost unheard of to find an elephant packing 100 lbs of ivory per side when this happened.
The hunter broke open his big bore double rifle and removed both rounds. He took careful aim and pressed one trigger, then the other. Snap. Snap. The hunter then turned to his PH and said, “Let’s go.”
I read this sometime in the ‘90s, and I believe it was probably in the writings of Capstick, but I can’t remember for sure.
If true, the hunter gave up a chance to have his name in Rowland Ward, Ltd forever. But he had a successful hunt and left happy.
