I recently read Robby Denning's book on mule deer and it was a game-changer as a self-taught guy. Does anyone else have a suggestion on quality educational books for hunting big game animals? I could care less about the pictures and mostly am looking for tips on hunting western state big game animals. TIA!

I started reading that stuff at the age of 10-12.
It doesnt matter a hill of beans.

40+yrs of hunting shows you go by your gut, sit tight and wait, or walk em down based on the situation.

Robby is a great guy but his approach is diff from David Long’s. Both kill grest bucks.

30% success rate means 7 guys go home empty handed. Prolly 20% shoot a fork or small buck. 10% or less get a good buck.

What makes you diff? How are you gonna make it happen? Thats your focus. You can get a nice buck. You just need a spin.

Look up the dude who gut shot and lost a boal/oil buck on a mtn and blamed a well known rokslider. He stumbles on deer when scouting and botches it up. 100+ pages of memes and funnies but no buck for that dude.

+1 for what @Rich M stated. Robby's book is awesome and I'm currently reading David Long's. Tons of great information in both books. Taking that info and putting it to use in your areas is what's key though. Learning everything you can is fantastic but you have to be able to put it to practice in the field. Soak up as much as you can and between Robby and David you will have plenty to go on. Start by applying the knowledge to your e-scouting and then to your boots on the ground and hopefully this fall the hard work will pay off! Also, don't be afraid to step out and try new things.

Yeah I’ve been holding out, I’m too cheap but I was able to find the publisher website and it appears you can by David and Dwight’s books at MSRP!

Has anyone ordered directly through stoneydale?

I wish I knew that earlier. At least my copy was signed so I can show that off to no one or my wife who won't care lol.

A few books I enjoyed and had lots of good info are Black Bear Baiting and Hunting by Dr. Ken Nordberg, North American Elk Ecology and Management by Troweill and Thomas, and The Pronghorn Antelope and it's management by Arthur s. Einarsen

How do you like that one? I’m giving bear hunting a shot this fall and I’m trying to soak up all of the available information that’s out there.

Its good. I got to chapter 8 last night (2/3 of the way through). So far it has covered a lot about general areas and hunting styles. It has broken down different techniques for spring and fall hunting as well as being exhaustive about baiting techniques, stand selection and dealing with guides.

If you have roughly 7hrs to burn reading I would definitely recommend it. I never understood just how smart bears are and how you can use that against them (if you bait) which I probably never will living in San Diego. Its still a worthwhile read if that tells you anything. Its very focused on killing bears, not telling stories which is what I like. I'd rather make my own stories...

For yote "hunting the hunter" covers just about everything.
Do you have an author for that book. This is the only one I am finding. Not sure if that is what you are referencing.... lol
