I would jump right into Adobe Premiere Pro. You can get it by the month instead of paying a kidney for one program and not being able to update it, it's not very hard to get the hang of (TONS of youtube tutorials) and then when you do get the hang of it your not really limited on what it can do. It's kind of an industry standard for us but it's also simple when it needs to be. If you have a macbook then final cut x would be another option although I'm really not a fan of it. It's kind of clunky and almost template based.
