Favorite Cow Call?

I wouldn’t rely on it during archery season, because there are better calls for that, but for rifle hunting I have one of these on the binocular strap to stop everything from antelope to deer to coyotes, and elk. It’s easy to change volume, easy to teach kids to use, and the body never wears out. Drive over it and it would still work just fine.

Any number of mouth reeds….once you learn how to use reeds you likely will not use anything else. Just like bugling, find the reeds you can make realistic sounds. There are many external calls, but they can be inconsistent, canned and when spit collects they often make no sound or something odd at the wrong time. I started with that Don Laubach call in the 80s and watched his videos. It was an ok call.

I struggle with mouth reeds (it’s actually embarrassing) so I’m pretty much stuck with an open reed style. I have a Primos something or other that sounds pretty good, but my favorite is a Woods Wise. It’s a little more temperamental but makes the soft mew of a cow very well.

The old Carlton's work good. Very loud, but it's easy to mess up, takes practice.

Temptress Cow Elk Call is Rocky Mountain Callseasier to master and can put out a large variety of sounds.

The mouth reeds are pretty easy for me. They just don't last long.

I like Cow Talk, Phelps black and yellow diaphragm and I have an older Barry cow call that’s worked well. Mostly just stick to mouth calls but that Cow Talk cartridge is always good to have in your pocket

First time elk caller this year and had the diaphragm calls working pretty well before season. That all changed when I actually needed to call softly and was super tense and jazzed up with elk in somewhat close proximity. I couldn't do much other than blow air over the latex reed as I could not relax enough to make a quite mew.

I was slightly better with a Primos Cowgirl but even trying to blow that softly under pressure was a challenge.

Guess I'm gonna have to get more exposure to dull the excitement or a Hoochie Mama.
