Favorite bird to hunt

Bobwhite quail are my #1

And 2-5

For about 10 years that's about all I did. Hunt quail, train on quail, and field trial on quail.

A couple of dove hunts. No big game, no waterfowl... QUAIL!

AZ. quail #1 all 3. Turkey second. Southern AZ for now . Headed north next month fingers xx'd

I’m going upland bird hunting in Montana this weekend, so maybe I will have a new favorite, but my best experience to date was pheasant hunting at Show Me Birds in Kansas. Watching the dogs work, being out on a beautiful day in nice farmland, with some good guys, getting my share of good shots, and not having to pluck anything at the end of the day was great.

I have a love-loathe relationship with wild turkey. I love chasing them, I love eating them for Thanksgiving dinner, but I absolutely loathe plucking and cleaning them. I would rather process three deer than one turkey.

Reading the trophy bird thread has made me think about what birds are special to different folks. It seems there is some regional preference for different species of birds. Like guys on the west coast prefer widgeon or guys down in Mississippi like their greenheads.

What’s your favorite bird to hunt and where are you from?

To start with, I’m from Iowa and my favorite hunts are pintail in a recently harvested field.
Mallards, Black Ducks, and Wood ducks dumping into a backwoods swamp in NY will always be my favorite. No one around except you and your buddies watching birds work is a great feeling!

I've plucked exactly ONE (1) wild turkey!
My nephew was living with us and he wanted a whole turkey for T'giving
I killed a 17 pound jake
As promised, I built a fire under my cast iron wash pot, scalded him and plucked him.
Scalding them doesn’t make it "easy" to pluck a turkey. But it does make it "easier"!
I just skin them out. Much easier.

We are in Southern Oregon. A lot of people here will say Chuckar, but I have to go with quail. A little more action for the kids.

If I have the opportunity to travel somewhere, it would be for pheasant. Mostly because where I grew up in thw Columbia Basin, that was king.

Pheasants with close family and friends. Its how I grew up and brings back so many good memories.
