Favorite bird to hunt

Reading the trophy bird thread has made me think about what birds are special to different folks. It seems there is some regional preference for different species of birds. Like guys on the west coast prefer widgeon or guys down in Mississippi like their greenheads.

What’s your favorite bird to hunt and where are you from?

To start with, I’m from Iowa and my favorite hunts are pintail in a recently harvested field.

The wild turkey is my favorite bird to HUNT. Going toe to toe with the king of spring with nothing more than a handful of calls is the pinnacle of birds in my opinion. I’m sure this will ruffle some feathers, but all the other bird hunts are really just dog work, decoy work, and shooting.

It’s not that we prefer wigeon, it’s because they are the predominant bird. The vast majority of us love mallards(as do most people that hunt ducks), but it’s hard not to love a duck that decoys well, responds to a call well and not uncommon for a flock of 80 to dive in. Wigeon make you feel like the rockstar of the duck hunting world. I absolutely love wigeon. With that said, I’d rather have a strap of 7 green heads than 7 cottontops.

If I may speak for my fellow Texans, I'd have to say pintails and quail. Of the birds we have (not a lot of mallards or other upland birds), that's what folks brag about.

Now personally, I've never killed a wild quail because i'm poor hahahaha. And pintails never cease to frustrate me. But I sure love fat ol' gadwalls falling into the decoys. And my dog and I had the most fun on a trip north for pheasants. Both are tasty, too.

From South Dakota and I love chasing specks. We didn’t have a lot years ago and now they are getting to be a bunch. They are frustrating and when we get them to decoy and work the way they maple leaf make me smile. Watching the dog work is my real joy.

For me, I love all bird hunting. Especially appreciate upland more now that I have a dog.

That being said, nothing will ever get my blood flowing more than watching a wad of greenheads maple leafing into my spread. Waterfowl (when it works) takes the cake for me. I don't do it as often anymore since it's more of a time investment than walking for Roosters.

From SD and my favorite is hunting mallards in a cornfield with some standing water. Doesn't matter to me if the heavy rains came before or after corn harvest. Water and corn have made for some epic hunts!

Never understood why folks called those birds the king of upland birds though. I'd say near 60% of them are just barely smart enough to breath. I have killed them with rocks :ROFLMAO:

Though you get a smart one in the brush and that is a good time.

As a young man all I wanted to hunt were ducks dark to dark for a few seconds of shooting
As a middle aged man I gravitated towards upland hunting, sunny fall days, crisp air good exercise and shoot a few birds
As an old man I dove hunt, lots of challenging shooting, several month long season, still upland hunting but the dove hunting sharpens my shooting skills better than any other bird.
