What are some pieces of gear that you would deem essential on a fall bear hunt? I'm new to bear hunting but have gone on several backcountry elk and muley hunts while living in Montana. thanks in advance for any input

I'm in the Southwest, so may be some preference for that vs. elsewhere in the West because of the sun intensity and potential heat.

1. Tarp for shade. While you could use it for a shade tent for glassing, I use it to generate sun/heat protection on a carcass. A few stakes and some long cord to string it up in any situation: tie to scrub oak, use trekking poles... whatever you have to work with. Depending on the sun angle, you may need to get it up kinda high.

2. Citric Acid powder and a small spray bottle. Mix up the solution and spray citric acid on the meat and on the hide to help deal with flies and bees. Be generous. You'll be hating life if you get swarmed.

3. A very large game bag -large enough to stuff an entire bear hide and head in. If you want to get super proactive, soak it in citric acid, let it dry and then vacuum seal it. I picked up a giant Kuiu game bag on sale last year. Its large enough that I can put an entire bear hide in it laid out to cool. If you immediately roll the hide up, you're going trap quite a bit of heat.

4. Skinning knife with a curved blade. You want to that curvature so you can maximize the fleshing of each singular stroke. Sheep skinners and hog skinners are probably the most ideal bear skinning knives. They have longer, curved blades. However, there are game skinning knives on the market with curved blades that work just fine, but a knife sold as a sheep or hog skinner will be best.

5. Tripod that is tall enough to glass standing up. If you're hunting in scrub oak, you'll often have to stand up to see.

6. Scope with a low power zoom. You'll often find bears in thick cover so you need to be able to take a close shot more than you will a longer range shot.

7. Sunscreen, sun hoody largest sunglass you can fit on your face. What bears eat in the Fall grows in the sun. Therefore, you are often in the sun as well.
