Just picked up a model 70 in 300 win, I dont reload and have no desire to as I dont shoot a rifle all that often for big game. This bear hunt will probably be it for the year with a rifle. Was looking at the barnes vor-tex ammo in 165gr. Anyone have any experience with this round? good/bad/ugly?

I'm curious what people with more experience say, but my impression is that you don't need that big of a gun. Depending on expected range and habitat, a 25-06 to a 270 shooting a 115 to 140 grain bullet should be plenty. Frankly, I found that a 300WSM shooting 180 grain NP was overkill. Key is shooting them in the kill zone. IMO.

a 300 Win Mag will make a fine bear AND other game gun - sure, a lesser cartridge will do but you already picked up this one so make use of it and never feel like "you didn't bring enough gun"

I think you have a fine cartridge there. I've had good luck with Nosler Partitions and Accubonds, but I think the Barnes bullet is a good one too. It will work.

I like accubonds but haven't been able to find them in anything less then 180 gr. This is my second 300, wisIh I would have never sold the first one. Very versatile round that will do it all. Never shot the barnes bullet and the gun very well may not like it but I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on the round.

My buddies 300 will only shoot the cheap federal blue box soft points, so naturally thats what he hunts with. Dumped a good boar last year at 300 yards. I think that makes the case that just about any factory round will work.

Shot Federal Accubonds in my m70 30-06 for awhile and they killed stuff and were accurate... switched to barnes 180 TTSX and they killed stuff and were a little more accurate... switched to 168 ttsx and they kill stuff and are even more accurate :)

My model 70 seems to handle most decent factory loads well.

Now my handloaded 168 TTSX are even more accurate :)

My cousin shoots a 300 with 180 accubonds and kills everything he shoots...

center punch the shoulder with any of todays 300win factory ammo and you will get your skinning knife dirty. you don't need a 70$ a box round to whack a 150- 250lb black bear
