Get the mystery ranch bucket or stone glacier weapon sling and rig it up. I'm sure both will fit. I had the stone glacier on mine last year and used as they recommend but I'm sure you could use it as pictured against the frame. Or wait as I think Steve and Lenny may be working on a weapon sling of some type.

This may have been covered already but this post is super long and getting a little hard to wade through. Do you guys that have the pack already think the 3500 is big enough for a week long trip or would the 5500 be a better bet?

My general rule is the average guy, packing 40lbs, should be able to get 4-5 days in the 3500 pretty easily. With the 2015 3500 having a floating lid that added even more capacity as well. If you are consistently doing 7+ day trips than I would look at the 5500.

I just ordered the 5500. Curious what your guy's thoughts are on the meat shelf. Is it a necessary add-on? Debating whether or not I should e-mail back and ask them to add the shelf. I try to save as much weight as possible . I'm thinking I could probably strap meat to the frame just fine but wondering others thoughts who have packed meat with or without the shelf. Is it hard to keep the meat from slipping down? My last pack was an external frame with a rigid shelf.

We definitely recommend the meat shelf if you bone out a lot of your animals, it was really designed for that purpose to give a solid bottom to the load shelf area so meat can't work its way down. If you are just hauling bone-in quartered animals its nice to have when you have those smaller loads but not essential.

Can the beaver tail be used between the pack and the frame as a meat shelf when it is not on the outside if that makes sense?

Just spoke with Steve and he said that it is possible, just can't be adjusted like the shelf...

I'll try it out when I get it and see how it works.

We are just waiting on the professional pack photos to get done. I am hoping by the end of next week I get those and we'll launch it right away.

Hey Steve,

Almost ready to pull the trigger on a pre-order of the multicam 3500. I'm waiting until the new website is up and running in order to check out the 2015 changes. Might I suggest that you make a gallery that includes the 3500 and 5500 side-by-side with pillows inside to show the size difference. Also, it's really nice to see a comparison of sizing with them on a model's back and then give the height and weight of the model so folks can get a good idea from pictures (or better yet video) of their size. It looks like you guys have a great product according to those here on Rokslide who have commented on them. I'm pretty stoked to give em' a run myself.

Thanks! ~Jim

Guys, you're going to love this pack! I packed out 3 elk with the 3500 last year. Sandwiching a half an elk between the frame & main bag on all 3 takes about two minutes once boned & in the game bags! The weight as shown in the photo sets plenty high & if you look close by my grey hair line (grin) you can see the load lifter webbing still plenty high taking most the weight off my padded shoulder straps. With 100# + it's the best pack I've used for all day hunts & getting ones elk out in a hurry in the last 40 years. It's the most comfortable pack I've used loaded or unloaded. Too, you can see my jacket strapped to the rear of pack in the swollen area, that's where my water bladder is inside the main bag, it's still in operation even with a full load of meat! This is huge when you have 1700' of elevation drop & several hours to get out! There's no meat in the main bag as it all fit nicely between frame & bag. I also have a .357 in a hip holster under the waistbelt & it rides very comfortable there with no rubbing at all, sweet pack!

One other nice feature to this pack is its ease of sliding the frame up & down up to 4", this is huge when you want your weight higher up on ones way out with a load! I leave mine down the 4" when in hunt mode so the top doesn't get tangled in branches & brush as I duck through the heavier crap!

Jim,
We definitely plan to get some side by side photos so its very easy to tell the difference between the two in size. That's something along with some videos I hope to do here in the next week.

If you have any questions about the pack just let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

If Paul's endorsing it as the best he's used- then I'm sold. Paul, your instructional videos got me super close to so many bulls this past season in Montana, thank you Bro! It was a mega-fun to have so many up close and person conversations with em'. Can't wait til next season to get back out there again! Looks like you guys had a successful season huh (meat on the back)?

Here ya go: http://www.elknut.com/

This guy must be part elk. From experience I can tell you his techniques & strategies work, they got me within 60 yards of 4 different 6 points this past fall on a 8 day hunt, 2 within 20 yards. Unfortunately I couldn't quite close the deal. But I learned a ton more getting that close to animals that is only going to increase my odds of success in the future. They'll teach you how to talk to elk and understand what they are saying. I believe his video series leap-frogged me maybe 5-6 years of what I might have learned just hunting. of The best part to me is the attitude with which he approaches hunting- "It's supposed to be enjoyable, have fun out there!" Highly recommend them all!

Parshal, I agree.

I think there needs to be a custom-shop ! Dreaming aside, I think it would be a BRILLIANT idea if Exo could offer aftermarket parts which can be mixed and matched between their bags. It may not bring in a huge amount of $$ initially, but when word gets out...it will be something special for sure.

Hunters are a bunch of gear heads. They love to tinker. What is really missing on the market are hunting packs/packs which allow a lot of tinkering. Having to go out and buy the latest model pack every year simply gets very costly after a while. Either produce a product which will remain as it is or offer flexibility and the ability to exchange parts.

Its great that the new frames will be able to be retro-fitted to the 2014 bags.

Have you never really checked out Kifaru? They are the king of tinkering packs and actually had a custom shop when they were smaller. All things Kifaru fit all new and older gen frames/packs.

Sorry for posting this up in the EXO thread, just thought he might want to know it isn't missing.

Is the main bag really waterproof? Or would I still want some dry bags just to be sure? After watching the videos about this pack I really have to add it to the list of choices. Now if I really want one I better get on the list or I won't get one until June :)

My experience is that it would be 100% waterproof, but the zipper on the main bag presents some problems. If the bag bulges the wrong way, the zipper can quickly become a leaky spot...I found this out the hard way in a long hard driving rain when I was testing its waterproofness! I'd highly recommend still using dry bags if you're worried about full submersion. If we're just talking about rain and you're not worried about full submersion, I'd just get a rain cover...it'll provide all the protection the pack needs in any downpour and keep the other compartments and face fabric light and dry...just my 2 cents.
