It happens unfortunately. I shot a dark horned non-typical whitetail on public land in West Virginia several years ago, and started the tracking too soon because of light rain. We bumped him and decided to back out. Next day I found where he died, and where someone drug him down and up to the road. Sickening really. But that's how it works sometimes. I always envision that they got a flat tire on the way out and the taxidermist screwed the mount up good, makes me feel a bit better...
