Eradication of Mule Deer on Catalina Island

The pigs were healthy. The goats were healthy.
Mountain lions are not endangered at all in California. Bobcats are extremely high in numbers. But the state took that harvest away. They're even about to put mtn lions on the endangered list. Nothing is justified. All these decisions were made by people with the most money.
I hate what they're going to do to the deer. But at the end of the day it's there land. Imagine someone having a say in what you do on your land. That would suck.
The Wrigley daughter has grapes. And money. The deer eat the grapes. The money decides their fate
yes but for example pig numbers (off island) are very healthy unlike off island mule deer numbers. That’s what I’m getting at. I agree I wouldn’t like being told what to do with my land, but just because there is a species of animals on it (that belongs to the people not just you) doesn’t mean you can wipe them out. Other ways to handle it. Plenty of farmers hate deer/elk for eating their fields ect and are given tags they can sell or other methods of compensation. No doubt the state of CA and then ca fish and wildlife (god forbid that say fish and GAME) make very poor decisions most of the time with regards to what is best for wild life

If Catalina Island were a cattle or sheep ranch with transplanted coyotes nobody would bat an eye at the landowner removing every coyote on sight. Most ranchers probably want 0 coyote / sq mi for lambing. When you're on the same side as the bleeding heart animal rights activists in LA county, that is pretty much grasping at straws.

FWIW I did watch the documentary and did not find it compelling. The interviews were kind of awkward and cagey. The bit about spotlight counting was an odd thing to get hung up on. The thermal drone dude picked up ~16 deer / sq mi. The spot light study estimated 5.41 deer / sq km. Pretty close. And density is irrelevant to the discussion so it's not a good argument. The conservancy argued that 0 deer / sq mi is an ideal number for those ceanothus and CDFW ultimately concurred with them.
