Emergency Turkey Hunt

Been a really tough work week, but what’s kept me going was looking forward to leaving in the morning for my 1st turkey hunt of 2019 with an old friend on his family’s ranch in WTX.

He called about an hour ago to cancel...

I’m already loaded up for a backpack style hunt and I need a mental break. Got the vacation approved. So, I’m still leaving early tomorrow morning, I just don’t know where I’m going. I drew a Gila elk tag, maybe I’ll drive there to scout the unit and try to locate turkeys? That’s 15 hours away and I’ve got to be back Sunday night, so I’d rather hunt somewhere closer than that but I’ve got no other ideas really.

Go north to northcentral Kansas. Get a map of WIHAs, use Google maps or OnX to confirm trees, and start hunting.

I'll add that other than scouting access points, elk location now will be different than elk location in the fall. Concentrate on killing turkeys.

Agreed, it would be just a chance to turkey hunt in the unit, give me a chance to get to know it some and maybe kick up some sheds.

I’m almost to San Angelo now. There is a little public there that I’ve never been to. Will take a look around and either set up camp or boogie on over to NM...

I ended up driving all the way to the Gila to get in a little scouting for my elk hunt. Picked up a turkey tag and came so close to filling it. Had one come in silent on me. I’d given up on that location, took the shell out the chamber and started moving to the next spot when he came over the ridge at 35 yards. Oh well. I was super happy just to have had an opportunity in those circumstances. Got in 15+ boot miles in the unit and learned a lot about it, validated some gear choices for the upcoming hunt while backpacking in the wilderness, and even found a couple

of elk sheds. Had a great time. Thanks everyone for the feedback.
