Elmer Fudd stories from the 2025 season?

Some of these stories sound like real Fudds.

Others sound like people who are just new and are out there trying to figure it out. Good for those guys.

Some favorites have been the 2 guys I bumped into within eyesight of the parking lot who had jeans, sneakers, and no backpacks. They said they were deer hunting but hadn't seen any, but they had just seen some "fresh urine" and said that the deer would be moving soon with the full moon.

Also ran into 3 guys (again very close to our parked trucks) who said they were elk hunting. They also had no gear aside from rifles, and a few of them were smoking cigarettes. Their plates were from out of state so I guess some people just like throwing away money. Or maybe they didn't even have tags in the first place. Neither would surprise me honestly.

I hunt all the time with no backpack, jeans on and sometimes sneakers. Other times ill have boots on.

Yes anyone sharing these stories is gonna sound a little bit like a jerk but as long as the fudds are not identified it's not harming anyone and I doubt the posters would think either of you guys actually fit the bill even if you did have Daisy Dukes on

Hauling out my last load of gear and meat after a backpack hunt in an OTC unit, I took a shortcut down a ridge rather than sidehill back to the trail. About a half-mile from the road, near a thick stand of elderberries, I smell the distinct aroma of cigarette smoke. I stop, look, and see in the middle of the elderberries a wilbur in a folding lawn chair with an 18-pack of bud light puffing away, rifle across his lap. He never laid eyes on me, and I opted to drop off the other side of the ridge, lest he think the antlers on my pack belonged to a two-legged buck.

This thread reminds me of a saying.

When you are hunting or fishing there are two groups. Your group, and the assholes.

The other guys are always assholes. They never know what they are doing. They are always ruining the area. They are always fuds.

Your group walks on water.

The part of my encounter with those guys that I thought was most humorous was what they said about finding fresh deer urine and the full moon, not what they were wearing.

In hindsight though, and thanks to your comment, I just hope they got out of there alive. Their clothing and footwear was insufficient for surviving a night out in November in Colorado, especially if any of it were to get wet. They were hiking up a mountain with no water and seemingly no other gear aside from a rifle. They looked ill equipped to deal with any big game kill, no game bags or backpacks to help carry anything out. I doubt they even had flashlights or headlamps in their jeans pockets and it was to be dark within the hour. Who knows how much farther they hiked in after I talked with them. Hope they made it.

I’m often the guy with a bottle of water and a pocketknife wondering what the hell the guys I meet are carrying up the mountain in the big full packs when I know they’re not spending the night up there.
I almost never hunt with more than a small daypack. When I kill an elk I quarter it, with my pocketknife, and use a bit of paracord to hang the quarters while I return for my frame and bags and sometimes some help.

My Fudd story for the year.
I shot an elk up on top of a ridge a mile and a half back from the ATV trail where I’d parked. Radioed my dad and he was heading up to meet me when he ran into a couple old codgers in a 4wd pickup. They were incredulous when he informed them that it was a 50” trail they were several miles back on in a truck. Said they were local and hadn’t heard of it closing to over 50” vehicles, it’s been closed since circa 1999, must be a new rule. They asked if he heard a shot and he replied that yes his son was up top and had killed a bull. Yep they said, most of them elk stay up there but you have to walk all the way up there and that’s why they never get one. They cracked another Coors Light and headed on down the trail…
