Elk with a collar?

I should have been more clear when I typed that out.

For me, there just seems to be something not so wild about an animal that's been darted out of a helicopter tranquilized and collared then released.

Part of the excitement of grabbing the rack of a huge old bull or buck is putting your hands somewhere no one ever has. At least to me.

This is just my opinion. I have no issue with anyone shooting anything that is legal and makes them happy.

In fact if I was getting my ass kicked on a cow hunt and had a shot at one with a collar I might just take it. But to shoot a big mature buck or a bull with a collar or ear tag just isn't something I'd be happy with.

That makes more sense. I guess I assume most collared elk are collared early in life. Maybe that’s not true though.

I get what you're saying, that animal has been conquered before.
Yes. Not to sound like what I care about is dominating and "owning" that animal because I killed it, but part of the sense of accomplishment is killing a majestic old cagey animal that's avoided being killed by wolves, bears, mountain lions and people until maturity.

If it's been caught and handled, that ship has kind of sailed in my mind. I know almost all of them are captured when they are young, just still a turn off for me personally.

No i think your right. From a research perspective they want to collar fawns and calves in order to get the longest data set possible and get a snap shot of their whole life. Still just a personal preference for me.

Make sure you return it to the Game & Fish regional office, there's a map on the website. You can also give it to a Game Warden or Biologist if you see them out and about.

I'm kinda with the tarnished group. Also, I have passed a few because I figured, or at least hoped, biologist were getting useful information from that animal. I could find other animals so why take that information source away. I know some are mortality studies and they want you to pretend like they aren't collared and some of the collars are no longer active, but that's impossible to know.

I've also never seen a big buck or bull collared, just cows and does, so maybe I'm full of it!

Nah not conquered, elk are just stupid sometimes haha.

My buddy shot a collared 5x5 last year here in AZ. Nice bull. We called it in before starting processing.

Fish and game came out and said his meat was no good as he got himself stuck in a canal down the mountain near town and couldn’t get out on his own, just a few days prior. So the tranq was still in his blood and meat according to the wardens making it inedible. They said other 3 days and the bull would have been fine to eat.

They said he could keep the skull and antlers and forfeit his tag, or they would take the animal and give him a new tag. He opted for the new tag and was able to get a raggy killed on the final morning of season.

Honestly to me- this is about as moronic of a statement as I have read on here. Well… I have read some really dumb sh$t on here.

If this is honestly your sentiment- we share vastly different viewpoints as to why we are chasing elk. To me it is an honor to be able to be out there and there is no way on God’s green earth I am “conquering” anything. If I happen to play my cards right, and be at the right place in the right moment- I may be able to share a an experience with with a pretty majestic animal on its home turf. I may also be lucky enough to help feed the fam for the next year. To think you could out elk an elk is brazenly narcissistic attitude imo, and we probably wouldn’t get along very well.

Maybe you'll get better at hunting some day. Either way, you do you boo. I enjoy the chase and an animal that's stupid doesn't provide that, see the post above about the dude that forfeited due to tranq still in the system. If I wanted to chase stupid animals I'd stare at a feeder in Texas.

Wait until you find out that a lot of guys will pass on a buck or bull simply because of the size of his rack. Then you'll be really upset.....

Just toss the collar onto a flatbed in the nearest truck stop

Game Biologists need some excitement in their lives too.

Again, you just come off as a narcissistic a-hole. Now I am positive we wouldn’t get along. This exact attitude is why we battle public sentiment.

I have been blessed in my bow hunting experience to harvest quite a few, you know I have never come across a screaming bull that is still waking up from the ketamine the biologist just tranqued him with earlier that day- just never experienced that.

If a calf, bull, cow whatever gets a dart put in em from a helicopter on its winter range- that just doesn’t degrade that animal to me. Not one bit

The need to dominate/conquer/ride whatever you think you need to do to a wild animal just doesn’t ring in my book, neither does calling another dude a boo.

I feel fortunate to have not crossed paths previously in the field, but then I probably would never even noticed you were there.

Not sure this has any bearing on respecting the game, but good try at being an a-hole I guess?

Being an A-Hole? Have you ever let an animal walk because it was small? I'm pretty sure 90+% of hunters do. Are you not ok with that?

Lol whatever you say pal. You realize nobody cares if some internet rando likes them or not right? Shoot all the collared pets you want, I'm sure they'll eat fine. Don't worry I totally agree we wouldn't get along and you'd not be welcome in my camp either. Nobody likes dudes spouting off some false sense of moral superiority when guys are just having conversations.

Spoken like a true Texan, ever wonder why stereotypes exist? I was actually enjoying this thread because I have actually pondered what I would do if a decent bull with a collar came in, then someone mentions buzzwords like conquering/dominating a wild animal. I couldn't disagree more with this sentiment but worse, publicly displaying that type of attitude is as I stated before, exactly why we face an uphill battle to continue to do what we all love.

Then you chime in questioning hunting abilities, shooting tranquilized elk, collared pets, and even threw in the holier than though, and internet rando cliches. I think you missed the boat.....

Wake up man!! I want my kids to be able to enjoy this as much as I do.

Read your first reply to my message and then please explain how you arrived at your second. Your first reply was meant as a condescending jab. I replied simply stating it wasn't a good one, nor did it have any bearing on the topic of respecting our quarry. Letting an animal walk because of rack size, hair color, or how good their teeth are- whatever floats your boat. I give zero sh%ts of what your standards, beliefs, etc are, as long as you have a tag for it.

Definitely turn it in to fish and game. I shot a collared moose here in WA (unbeknownst to me as the collar was old and covered with hair) and I turned it in. The BIO sent me all of the activity they had recorded while the collar was still alive. It was interesting.
