Elk with a collar?

“Many animals from deer to moose are fitted with collars that collect data, which are important to wildlife research,” said Tim Woolley, statewide wildlife and habitat management supervisor. “You can still harvest an animal that is wearing a collar. We just need the collars returned so we can use them again and know the animal we were tracking was harvested.”

I shot a bull in WY that had ear tags. They were pretty cool about it when I called in the numbers and told me the background on the bull. Tagged as a calf 6 years prior on the winter range about 20 miles away.

I did not know it was "banded" when I shot it

When you turn it in, make sure to speak with the Warden and exchange contact info. Most of those folks will give you the back ground of the Elk, where it had been collared, how far it had gone, age. etc, etc.

This. I know a couple instances where fish and game shared the actual tracking data. The hunter got to see where the elk lived over the previous couple years.

Shoot a wild animal that another human has already had their hands all over? I'm good.

The only worry is if the animal had been tranquilized somewhat recently (can't remember the timeline). It's meat can be non-edible.

That’s one of the stranger comments I’ve read on rokslide.
I should have been more clear when I typed that out.

For me, there just seems to be something not so wild about an animal that's been darted out of a helicopter tranquilized and collared then released.

Part of the excitement of grabbing the rack of a huge old bull or buck is putting your hands somewhere no one ever has. At least to me.

This is just my opinion. I have no issue with anyone shooting anything that is legal and makes them happy.

In fact if I was getting my ass kicked on a cow hunt and had a shot at one with a collar I might just take it. But to shoot a big mature buck or a bull with a collar or ear tag just isn't something I'd be happy with.

I get what you're saying, that animal has been conquered before.
