Elk preference points???

Looking at a 2020 archery elk hunt either to Montana or CO. Is it worth puting in to gain a point in both states to improve hunting odds next year?

If you want to hunt MT at all it would be wise to get a preference point now then another when you apply next year. That’s just for a general (otc) license.

Colorado you can just buy an otc license. Not sure how many units are out there that one point would make much difference than no points.

If the current trend with MT general continues, yes. Everyone can buy a point at the time of applying. You can also buy one the year before to total for two. In years past, no one needed them. Times have changed. I had two when I applied a couple weeks ago.

For CO it depends. How many points does it take for the unit you want to hunt? If it takes points, then yes........you'll need points.

But here's the kicker.........they are redoing their 5-year plan starting in 2020. And there have been talks of making more units draw rather than OTC, so yes......you'll need points if they go that route.

Last year the Big Game and Elk Combo were both 100% draw with one point (approx 50% with no points). This may change in the future similar to WY.

I always go in with two, $50 extra for insurance to draw is good with me

FYI Colorado just doubled their preference point cost this year, around $50 previous years to just over $100 this year. Their preference point application process is pretty confusing also as this year you have to purchase a small game license to even purchase a elk preference point. Makes no sense to purchase small game license when your purchasing a big game preference point!

But if you're applying for muley and elk, its only $9 more. So its not as bad as people seem unless you're only in it for one species

Do you know any more about this? Like what units or how serious the talks are etc?

In my opinion if you can afford the application points are never a bad thing. Especially if you are applying for trophy units in the future.

I've only been elk hunting 4 seasons and I've noticed that it is getting harder and harder to get a tag. Wyoming used to take <2 points, montana was de-facto OTC.. seems both of these states no longer are in reach as they were even in 2015. I would pursue a points strategy.
