Can’t emphasize this enough. We had a huge windstorm during late buck this year in eastern Washington. My dad and I spent the morning cutting and dragging trees to get into our area. Definitely ruined the morning hunt, but we still had a great time.

this a joke? unbelievable amount of places to ride atvs in N ID. I wish more of it was closed as its ridiculous in places

Harvested bulls throughout the entire month… had some epic days from Labor Day weekend all the way to the 30th… my favorite is the 15th-19th, more due to the fact had a few herd bulls hit the dirt in that span. I wouldn’t worry about snow, it can happen but really rare that early. It can take a lot of perseverance at times with elevated hunting pressure and predators. Can still have great hunting days, but at times it can feel desolate. Brush choked mtns with dark timber. Not a spot and stalk type of hunt. Best of luck

Learned this lesson with my wife. Weather predicted wind but I disregarded it. On the way home we came around a corner to find multiple trees down. Not a fun wait and “I told you so’s” until someone came by with a saw. Also had numerous mornings where i took second or third choose roads due to down trees. I’ve always got at least an axe and hatchet in the truck now

Where I elk hunt in Idaho I have cut 40-50 trees in the last 2 years outta the road. I never leave the house without my chain saw, a chain for pulling and tire chains

Born and raised here!! hunted around the state end to end .. I just prefer not be anywhere Non res see 4 wheeler trails and flock to them!

Dworshak unit. Am I able to use them on logging roads? Unit is filled with them.

Describe best. I have spent the last 3 Septembers in the mountains of north Idaho. I have found the first few days are the best for calling in curious non herd bulls. September 18th has produced herd bull encouters every year. The last few days net you spooky elk 90% of the time and 10% of the time you can get a big bull fired up.

Every year has been similar so far....this past season seemed to heat up a bit slower.

Your post is exactly what I was looking for. Just wanted some general knowledge of the area of what people think is "best". This definitely helps and thank you!

Not sure about northern Idaho specifically but I think the best time generally is at sunrise and between 10 & 2

I have never heard of the 10 and 2 before. I will have to try that. I've always thought to sit until 10 before starting to glass. Thank you for the helpful hint.

It was still getting up to 70-80 degrees the last week of September this year. It has snowed in September before, but more than likely not.

I’ve seen snow approaching a foot deep in September.

Your atv will be useful.

As much of September as you can take to hunt. It’s a tough game hunting the suck.

Most of mine are late in the month the bulls say these days are goodlast one is 9/30 best thing is rifle is sometimes better than archery for calling

I’ve had great calling days the first couple days of the season before and I’ve had years where I didn’t hear a thing until October. Can be a lot of variance in this part of the world

As for snow it’s certainly possible, but not common is the best way I could put it.

You put it perfectly. From the replies on this interesting thread, ide say the snow is not likely.

Never thought of putting that in the truck. Better to have it and not need it. Very helpful information.
