Just buy a used freighter frame. Like $50 bucks.

That is what I have and it has worked perfectly for hauling out maybe 50 elk and a bunch of deer. The pack has a basic aluminum frame with a shelf, padded straps and a good waistband. It is extremely light weight.

For day hunts I use a Badland Monster fanny pack that holds everything I need to process an elk, can carry out the loins on my first trip out, and has enough straps to carry extra clothing or a light sleeping bag. Plus it is light weight.

I tried out the the heavier, bigger and more expensive packs for regular carry on day hunts and soon realized they were severe overkill. They are way heavier than I wanted to carry for days of mountain hiking when I usually do not get anything.

Going on my first elk hunt in October, what’s your best suggestion for a beginner pack? Not looking to spend a whole lot on my first one just in case the elk hunting world isn’t for me.

Heres the thing. Boots and pack are the two most important things on a backpack hunt. If you can afford it then buy an upper end pack and heres why. You can get by with a lesser pack as people have been for years and years but the quality of your first elk hunt will suffer. Even it turns out elk hunting isn't for you then you can sell the pack for very nearly what you paid for it. If you do like elk hunting then your basically set for life without wasting all the money the rest of us have. If you decide to do this and want to stay on cheap side of quality packs I would probably recommend one of the Kuiu Pro Packs. Good luck and I hope it goes well.
