Elk disease Nevada

I’m currently on an hunt in Nevada. Any idea what’s wrong with this bull I found a few days ago? I could have pushed harder to get a shot right before last light but I was put off cause I wasn’t sure if he had an infection. I didn’t have a spotter to see If it was just a skin issue. I’m beginning to regret not trying to get a shot.

Think he could've gotten struck by lightning and survived it? There was a picture of a bull a little while back that had gotten struck and he had that same black "burnt" looking spot.

Makes me wonder if either of the two was "struck by lightening" after seeing that previous bulls photo and now this one.... they look almost identical in placement of the "wound" and look of the "wound".

Heck maybe they both got hit by lightening. Crazier things happen.

Scabies, or at least that's what I've been told by the biologist. Here is a bull I turned up while deer hunting, he's the second nice bull this year I've seen with it in our area (NW Wyoming).

Permethrin cream is what you need to apply to that elk. After many lathers, kill him

Mites don’t get into the meat but continues rubbing of the skin could cause wounds and might create a bacterial infection in some cases

IMO its just a skin condition most likely scabies or an infestation of ticks that is bugging him. You can see in the pic that he's using his antler/main beam to scratch/rub the crap out of it. I see it every now and again there in eastern NV, during the Nov. rifle hunts.

Mange is my guess. Killed a buck this year that was covered in it from head to tail, had the same matted, spotted look.

The “mangey scabies bull” doesn't sound as cool as the ”lightning bull” but it’s good to know for future reference. Wish I had taken him, but that’s hunting I guess. Thanks for all your input guys.

They look healthy. Not skinny. So this is just not mud? I’ve killed a 7x7 that looked like he rubbed his hair off from his brisket up both sides to his shoulders. But He was covered in ticks.

That bull was either hit by lightning or was taken up in a UFO and probed until its side was carpet burned. Little bastards.

happens to moose around us a lot is ticks and it will be just skin
