Electronic hearing protection and hearing game - whats best?

I purchased a pair of Soundgear Shields last week when they were on sale. A friend had good things to say about the older version of these he'd been using for upland hunting. They are comfortable and seem to work well but haven't taken them into the field yet. Also don't know about longevity yet. But for 299 I thought I'd give them a try before going with custom molds like alclears.

I’ve been happy with ESP custom fit ear protection for many years . I’ve been upland hunting and continue to run pointing dogs for over 30 years. With these you can hear a quail move thru the brush. The sound protection is great and they fit flush in your ear. If you are fitted properly they will never fall out. They are very popular with sporting clay and trap shooters.

I have sensitive ears and narrow ear canals. For drumming I use custom molded in-ears.

For shooting days for the last 6 months I’ve replaced my foam plugs with an electronic unit from Otto.

Using memory foam plugs in place of the plugs that came with them, I can wear them all day and they don’t bother me. They allow for normal volume to be heard clearly and loud noises are blocked out.

They work with both suppressed and non suppressed guns.

Have used custom fitted (audiologist) Soundgear "Silver" plugs for many years, both hunting and at the range. Rechargeable has its plusses, but the week-and-a-half battery life with the zinc-air batteries is nice not having to worry about a charging case or power when camping. Would definitely suggest if looking for IEM to make sure they offer replaceable wax guards.

Good thread, endless options, I use cheap earplugs while hunting, one day when I am better at keeping them in place I will buy quality (expensive) one

reviving due to upland season around the corner. Any enlightenment recently with hearing protections? Looking at Otto Noizebarriers, or the offerings of SoundGear. Any advice would help.

for some reason, all of the OTTO reviews are gunTubers, not hunters.

How is the directionality with ESP?
Excellent

I got the newer model non-custom sound gear (shield maybe called?). Only had them out a couple times but so far im impressed with sound quality and direction correctness. Haven't had them in any real wind yet. They go on sales periodically and I think On-X premium might also offer a nice discount code.

How do the Otto's work for deer hunting? My ears are getting bad enough i can rarely hear a grunt. My main focus is hunting, will they enhance sound enough to hear a deer grunt or distant turkey? Or is there a better option for my needs?
