I'm shooting a 30-06 with 180 grain Remington core-loks. I've had good luck with this combination.

I'm looking to shoot out to 400 yards. Is factory ammo good enough for that range?
Are ELD-X bullets an upgrade?
Should I look to upgrade premium factory ammo?

Core-lokt has killed millions of critters and should perform just fine sub-400. Shoot what your gun likes between those two IMO. I actually like the core-lokt and Federal blue box stuff in my wife's old 308 better than the X from what I saw on animals, everything she shot with cheap cup and core basic rounds had some good holes with good destruction and died quickly. Saw some X that just didn't seem to do a lot of damage or bleed much but still died quickly.

I killed lots of deer with coreloks in the 90s. But I moved away from them because back then, every single one fell apart. Still killed everything. But I wasted a lot of meat. I shoot the accubonds, barnes and eld-x now. Haven't killed with the ELDx, but it has a lot of people supporting it. The Barnes have performed well for the most part. Not as much expansion, but they are accurate and easy to load for.

It might be.
They may be.
You may want to.

How does the current bullet shoot at 400 yards. Do you know your MV? Any idea on impact velocity?
Are you dialing your shots or just Kentucky windage? Do you feel you are proficient enough to go shoot both side by side and real world compare?

If its accurate don't mess with it. Accuracy should trump everything. if an indian could kill a buffalo with a broadhead carved from a rock than your corelokt will be just fine.

I have two rifles that shoot corelokts better than anything else, I don’t have a problem with it. I have a handful of rifles that do not like eldx’s, to the point I barely try them anymore unless I already have them on hand.

I compared Remington Corelokt Tipped in 165s to Hornady ELDXs in 178s just recently in my .308. The Hornadys walked all over, about a 5moa pattern with 5 shots at 100. But I'm shooting the Corelokt Tipped legitimately sub moa at 100 and have found it's staying within moa out to 400 so far. I've shot the ELDXs in the past (different rifle) and the performance was good. I think they're a good bullet, but each rifle likes what it likes. I'm super happy with my accuracy with those Corelokt Tipped and would recommend giving them a try. Pretty good value too for factory accuracy to at around $40/box. So far I've killed a few deer with them and had no issues with performance (granted the furthest was a muley buck at only about 220yds and the closest was a whitetail buck at about 50) *Edit to add, and a pronghorn buck too at a little over 200. All of them dropped like a sack of rocks

Old Corelockts in my 280 AI. I have no problems with them . Have not tried the tipped ones yet.

An upgrade, no. Regular interlocks would probably be a lateral move or possibly an improvement since you are shooting heavy bullets.

Any Barnes would be a step up IMHO but Im not a advocate of hunting with target bullets like most here.

I've killed several elk with each. They are all still dead.

My opinion, which is limited, is that they perform similar on game, but the ELD-X group better. Both do fine, but don't always hold together super well.

That being said, maybe your gun likes Core-Loks better.

Whatever your gun shoots best and you’re most comfortable with. Both have killed semi truck trailers full of elk.

Eld-x are a better option in my opinion. Ive never been a core-lok guy at all.. Although i have had instances where the core-lok ammo gave me the better grouping when no other ammo was cooperating..

Guys from my area use them and swear by them.. Im just a hornady guy i guess you could say.

Core lokt has a reputation for being a really inconsistent and poorly shooting ammo. I’ve never had any “major” issues, but I feel considerably better shooting ELD-X and do notice a difference. I would recommend it over Remington every day of the week and twice on sundays.
