As said maybe its just the fact that it’s a first time for me as they always drop like potato
Deer only drop like a potatoe when you hit something in the CNS system or you break legs etc.

There is a nerve complex that comes down through the heart lung area that when struck correctly will temporarily incapacitate the animal.

Hitting 3 ribs tells me there was a prey good angle when the animal was hit.

we’ve not had great success with the eldx multiple elk and it grenades, haven’t recovered one bullet
Anywhere from 200yd to 500yds
Much better luck with accubonds where they expand but not detonate and usually end up inside the offside hide

After that I paid a lot more attention

Since we all have a compass and now a rangefinder in our pocket, this is easier than ever. You know where you are now, what the range to the animal was, and can use the compass to get an exact bearing. Mark where you shot from very consipicuously and you can know you are in the exact right spot when you start looking. Get the range right by shooting back at your marker, compass bearing 180* from measured, both of those match you are in the exact right spot.

Here is an exit from a 178gr ELD-X on an elk from this October. It was a 300win and it didn't drop him in his tracks. He didn't run, he just hunched up. So my brother shot him 2 more times before he went down. 100yd shot

The 6mm 103 ELD-X might be too hard for deer. I took a frontal shot at a deer at around 2400 fps. The bullet went straight through about 75% of the body, mushrooming inside the hindquarters. The deer turned, so I followed up with a shot through the left shoulder, which blew through and left a golf-ball-sized exit hole. The lungs were shredded, and the deer ran about 20 yards before going down. I finished it off with a neck shot, but that one also just penciled through.

Elk,175 ELDX 7 Prc 2850 FPS at 30 yards. First shot was quarter two point of shoulder and exited in front of offside hip... tried to get up so second shot was through front shoulder and on the hide on other side.
Inside was destroyed and likely done on the first shot. Likely keep using them.

One I made...been trying several different blade shapes over the years and I believe this is my favorite. Loose copy of a MKC Stoned Goat.

I don’t understand how this relates ?
Yes it died but not as quickly or what I expect to see out of a bullet

If I liked bullets that completely explode on impact than I’d use it but I won’t a deep penetrating bullet that holds together well and gives me the best chance at recovery

A 22LR would kill an elk but is it the best for the job?

Was just curious if your "not great success" was because the bullet didnt kill or didnt kill the way you wanted it to.

I’ve posted these pics before, but it’s kinda fun for me, so…

150 eldx from a 7mm-08, through an antelope’s heart, he didn’t drop on the spot but he sure didn’t go far. Bullet exited.

IMG_0589.jpeg

Cow elk at 375 yards, broadside, 162 eldx from a 7mm Rem Mag.

20200829_071517.jpeg

Bullet centerpunched the left humerus just below the big shoulder knuckle. Thats a hefty bone.

IMG_4589.jpeg

Hit a rib going in and a rib going out, lodged under the hide on the opposite shoulder.

IMG_1705.jpeg

IMG_1709.jpeg

The elk died right now. Look at the bullet. I can’t ask for more. Didn’t weigh it, don’t care.

We have lots of stories with the 150 and 162 7mm eldx, all good.
