Durston xmid vs xdome

The X-Dome is money. I am 6ft 7, 110kg (242lbish) and I fit in the X-Dome 1+ with a bit of wiggle room on my sides and a bit of space at head and foot. It is the first "1 person" shelter I have ever been able to fit in. I have used it in some down pours so far to make sure I'm not getting leaking onto my gear or through touching the fly but haven't encountered that yet.

I haven't personally owned the X-Mid but have been around a few at this point and as soon as the X-Dome was released I knew I was gonna get it over the X-Mid to save mucking around setting up a shelter.

Have any of you with the Xdome used your trekking poles to stiffen it up for high winds? That seems like a really nice feature. I had my Xmid2 in a big storm, 50mph gusts and I’m so impressed with how it did, I really love the livability of space in these tents, and all the vestibule space. Am I barking up the wrong tree here and should just keep running the Xmid? I like the dome’s increased volume, but those tiny poles stress me out.

If using the carbon poles, then yeah you should be stressed. They do not belong on a backcountry shelter. The aluminum poles are the only way to go for an X-Dome that is used in serious weather.
How do you feel the weather proofness of the X-dome is ? I have seen some reviews stating with rain it getting wet inside the tent

I’ve not used mine in any sort of weather yet, so can’t say. There’s large number of people that are fans, more than those with complaints it seems.

I keep checking the Durston site but haven't seen the AL pole set available for the x-dome. (mine is a 1+) They're always sold out. Were you able to get them direct with a call or did you order them?

I’ve been checking and not seeing the option either. I’ll probably just send them an email, they’ve been prompt in the past.

In "spare parts and repairs" on the site it shows the DAC poles as a stand-alone item. That item, however, is never in stock.

I believe the fly for the aluminum is different (larger clips). Dan has mentioned that the aluminum fly will work for both, but it doesn’t sound like the carbon fly works for aluminum.

It may also be worth mentioning that Dan claims that specially on the x-dome 1, the aluminum and carbon poles are equal strength. The 2p x-dome gains some strength however.

I’m sure you’ve seen it if you’ve been checking the website, but they say they should have a restock on June 23rd.

If OP still hasn’t pulled the trigger, don’t sleep on the Tarptent Dipole. Nice tidy footprint, don’t have to mess with that weird inner geometry on the xmid, so I’ve never had issues finding a suitable spot to pitch, and it solves the biggest issue taller folk have with pyramid style shelters by eliminating the steep end walls. Two vestibules, albeit narrow, have not yet left me wanting for more room for gear organization even in less than ideal weather. It has become my favorite option for Sept/Oct hunts and I have about a dozen tents to choose from. If I could figure out how to fit a stove jack in there it may honestly me my go to tent for everything unless you’re up above tree line.

Using the outer with a bug bivy feels palatial and has me at about 1.5lb and going floorless with just the outer keeps it to a pound.

Never see it mentioned really and honestly I do not understand why…
