Dumb Question Alert: CDS Turret

I’m looking at a good deal on a Leupold with a CDS turret but frankly I don’t plan to do much twisting for long range shooting. Can a CDS be used like a conventional turret? I just want sight in 2” high at 100 yards with my load and leave it alone. I can always getting into utilizing the CDS later. Is a CDS turret exposed or is there a cap? Can it lock down?

I believe the vx5 has a lock at 0. My vx3i does not but I also cant recall ever bumping it hard enough to turn it. I keep the neoprene cover over it while hiking tho. You still zero the rifle the same as you always do, and then reset the turret cap to 0 on the dial. Extremely easy to do. I dont use my dial until ranges get beyond 350-400. It's a nice setup for just occasional dialing, very low profile compared to the true "long range" turrets

Turret is exposed. It is a normal turret until you send on your certificate into leupold. Then they send you a turret for your rifle based on the information given. I believe the only ones that lock are on certain models like the vx5 and vx6.

Another dumb question: once sighted in do you set the turret to “0”? That way a quick spot check can indicate if the turret got bumped and moved.

Yep once your sighted in set the dial to zero.

Yes the zero is whatever you have sighted it in at. The turret is set to the info you give them. Sight in distance, bullet weight, velocity

Go Vols. Graduated there in 2005 and my wife is from Farragut. I’m UTGrad on TNDeer.

So basically if I don’t plan to use the CDS feature I can still use the zero as a reference if the turret moved. Cool. Yep I think I’ll do the CDS

Both my sons are UT Grads!!!! I'm the same name on Archery Talk. Turrets are awesome. You can use them or leave them alone. I shot an elk at 550 yards last year. Dialed the sight in and dead elk!!! Don't really use it in TN, but out west yes.

Anybody found the CDS system accurate enough out to 500 yards on whitetail?

I practice with mine out to 700 yards and never once had it fail. As long as you know your ballistics and practice with it to confirm it I trust the dial fully. I am just using the factory moa dial tho. I play around with different loads and elevations enough that I don't have the need to for the custom turret

It’s been good for me, I would recommend verifying your ballistics at ranges before you send it to leupold. I won’t buy another Leupold without the CDS, it’s great.
