Ducks for a new guy

Limited budget, limited space, no dog, no experience. Lots of ambition. Lots of public land potholes. Waders and fishing rod for retrieval limit me to ponds I can still reach cripples.

Just goes to show that persistence and patience go a long way towards reaching your goals.

I never thought of a fishing pole! What size of hook do you use?!

I use a Zara spook top water with 2 treble hooks. It's a telescopic rod with 20lb braid. Works pretty good.

I think you're doing fine. Around here, if you kill a limit of wood ducks, you're doing something. If you're real special, you may get a couple Canadas.

We've got pretty generous bag limits up here but no woodys so I'd be pretty happy to even see one. I'm looking forward to trying my hand at field shooting geese next year.

Learning is half the fun. I went into it thinking I would just be happy to see a duck. Came home with a handful. Its a blast. The guys on tv with the money and the dogs arent the only ones that can do it.

It's a blast, you're going to love it. Big spreads and boats aren't always needed if you do some leg work first and find the right water for you.

Mighty fine sir. you don't have to have all the duck commander equipment to kill birds. You have killed more than a lot of these gear head duck hunters have. Sometimes simpler is better. If you stay with it and upgrade to boats and high dollar calls and decoys one day you will look back and probably realize you had more fun using that spinning rod hunting potholes.

I don't think you can beat a quality mixed bag waterfowl hunt. Especially when hunting with some good friends.
