Dt1 vs highcamp 7000

First I'll say that I agree with alot of y'all's advice about going with the bigger bag, since it's kinda hard to make more space, but you can sure cinch it down. It's not much difference in weight or price, so I wouldn't feel bad about carrying around 3 extra oz of bag if I didn't fill it completely.

But just playing devil's advocate, and throwing the weight and cost argument out of the mix, if you got the 4800 along with pockets/grab-it/pods/ect. to equal ~7000ci, wouldn't you have a more versatile bag than just the HC7000 by itself?

You'd have a smaller bag when you stripped it down for scouting/backpacking and a larger bag with organization (pockets) when you need more volume for extended trips and/or hauling meat/camp.

I tend to like pockets for organizing gear, so that's why the 4800 + pockets is even a consideration...but I know it's more of a convenience than anything, a big bag would work perfectly fine.

Am I missing anything?

No your not missing anything. But might as well just get pockets on a bigger bag if you like pockets. My thought with a bigger bag cinched down is when you kill something you have more room to pack meat out with gear. That's my strategy at least.

I use my High Camp 7000 as a day pack. With the hope of filling it with meat on the way back out.

Elk, bone in hind quarter will easily fit in my HC4800. The bulk of it will fit in the GenII meat bag, hanging inside the 4800.

Thanks. Back to my thread revival post #23, can anyone post the dimensions on the HC4800 so as to compare to those posted ealrier for the DT1 and HC7000?

I tried that ealier this year and did not get a clear answer. Would be nice if the info was posted on their website for all their packs. The only hard measurements I have seen were as posted on this thread by Rambler for the DT1 vs the HC7000 and I found it very helpful, I would rather hear from someone who has the HC4800and maybe has even dumped a quarter or two into it.
Thanks

Hopefully this helps.

From the Kifaru site:

HC4800 - 43" diameter opening at top, 30" diameter at bottom, 9" depth, 29" overall height

HC7000 - 45" diameter opening at top, 36" diameter at bottom, 10" depth, 33.5" overall height
View attachment 10112

DT1 - 42" diameter opening at top, 30.5" diameter at bottom, 9" depth, 41" overall height fully extended

Edit: Nevermind, those come up really small. Anyway, they are on the Kifaru site and you can compare the dimensions.

Thanks Colonel. I didn't see that on the site earlier in the summer so maybe they added it since or I just missed it.

So looks like the HC4800 is pretty similar main bag dimensions and volume as the DT1 with the snow collar removed. That HC7000 is huge. I would be worried about the weight sagging down low and away if not packed properly, but I assume guys are managing just fine with it.

Superdeuce,

I don't know if you can see the attachments that Colonel linked (I can't), but you can see the dimensions of each bag on each bag's page in the Kifaru site. Where they show all the product photos, there's a pic with dimensions. I'm doing a quick spreadsheet to see them all side by side...yeah I know a little nerdy, but I blame it on my job :p

This is what I've got from the site for the HC 4800 vs DT1 (w/o snow collar):

HC4800----HC7000----DT1-----DT2
43----------45----------42-------41----(Upper Circumference)
30----------36----------30.5-----29----(Lower Circumference)
11----------11----------11-------11----(Upper Width)
13----------13----------14-------14----(Lower Width)
29----------33.5--------31-------29----(Height)
9-----------10-----------9---------9----(Depth)

*Numbers are in inches
