Sorry for your loss. Hope all is going better with you and your family Elkhunter. I hope that I am not over stepping my bounds, Elkhunter but I am going on my first elk hunt in Units 80 & 81 for 1st rifle season. I have been putting in for NM for the last 7yrs and thought I'd try Co. as luck would have it, I got drawn. I have been getting my gear ready, looking over maps, studying weather forecast for the last 6 months. I have a ton of questions. Do you have any tips for that Unit that could possibly help me? I am a Houston firefighter and consider myself in decent shape. If round is still a shape...I have been walking trying to get my endurance up. However this Houston heat can take a toll on you. I am so green that I have never seen a elk on the hoof. So just seeing elk will be a success. I have hunted whitetails for 25 plus years and I consider myself better than average. I now that elk are a whole different game. Any help given is appreciated. Some of my questions are. Should I hunt high or low? Should I still hunt or walk? I will hunt the entire day of every day. I am not a hunter that will hunt for a few hours and then go back to camp. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I enjoy being outdoors. And the mountains make it even better. Thank you for your help

No need for a satt phone. In the deep draws you will not have service from any cell phone provider but I have yet to not find a signal above 10k. If you find an open area just test your signal, usually you'll find a few different spots to use for calling home. I picked up a spot gen 2 on clearance from cabelas this year because sometimes you are just to exhausted or the phone signal area is in the wrong direction and it is late. I usually only call every two or three days but I now have a 3 year old and 7day old so figure it would give my wife a tad more piece of mind to get something from me daily.

I have Sprint service so can't say how AT&T is and I hear Verizon is good.

I'll be out in that general area next yr for archery and was wondering that myself, so good to hear! Congrats on the little one!

We saw elk, but the hunting partner blew out his ACL a couple days in and we had to come down. Was quite devastating. Really a downer. Ended up hunting mulies with my in-laws and got one down. Just really bummed about the elk trip. All that time, money and planning. Sigh.
