Planning first ever archery elk trip for this year. Would y’all recommend putting in for draw then going OTC if didn’t draw? Or just plan for OTC from beginning? I’m wondering what wd be best chance just to get opportunity. Open to any advice you may have. Thanks

Exactly what was said above. Apply, if you don't draw get a point, then buy OTC.

Jay, I would seriously consider at least 3 years of OTC elk hunts before making a decent draw elk hunt my first archery one. Elk hunting can be tough business, just because you draw a tag it doesn't make success come any easier especially with someone with little to no experience. Get some boots on the ground & a few trial & error encounters so when you do draw a tag you have some personal experience to help guide you on how to handle a variety of situations you will encounter in varying terrains. All draw areas are not created equal. Learn how to Call, know where to find elk, understand their behavior & needs, you'll also find out more about yourself & what country you're best suited for as well as prep you for the gear needed. Apply in units that benefit your style best. Things as this will prepare you now & in your future hunts! Good Luck!

If you did draw a better then avg tag for you cherry elk hunt I would recommend either going with someone experienced or even going guided if you can swing it.
Going OTC a time or two is first is good advice.

Thanks guys for the input. Makes a lot of sense. Appreciate it! I’m still trying to do as much research as I can but nothing can beat time spent in the woods!
