You might give Dilmunfast Drahthaars a call. They have one listed on their website (may or may not be current). Mike is a straight shooter and will tell you what the dog does and doesn't do well.
 
Good book recs to get familiar with training field/gun dogs? I self-trained our retriever with Dokkens' book, although she was gun shy and didn't hunt, it was still great fun and a huge benefit for her in the obedience realm. Will be taking our next pup to classes at a local club and training with him/her. Most of the contracts/breeders require Debry and a handful of other field tests, so I'm hoping to get up to speed ahead of time. Thanks

I've never had a true drat, but have had GWP, WPG and now have a Slovakian Wirehair. The wirehairs in general are an absolute blast to be around. They are intense in the field. As long as you keep them with a job, you won't (at least shouldn't) have any problems with them. If they don't have a job, they will find their own and that isn't good. All of mine have been awesome house dogs. They tolerate cats as long as they don't run from them. Their prey drive is incredibly hard to turn off.
 
Well dudes...thanks for all of the advice. I updated the title as I'd thought I had won't the DD/DK battle with the wife. In fact, she won out yesterday and we ended up with a deposit down on a littel from a fantastic sire/dame in the DK world, the Sire had a 336 on the VGP, amongst a bunch of other titles. Wife wanted the "cuddle" factor close to what we had with a retriever (she's stay at home and really likes the companionship when I'm gone). we're still getting the hunting prowess of the German trained/tested dogs with the DK. That plus we may move back to the southeast at some point and the DK may do better in the warmer weather than a DD.
Thanks for all the inputs folks...still going to snag that DD training/testing book as that's recommended by a few DK breeders I've spoken to as well.

My wife always said the same thing! She has a very well furnished Pudelpointer and thinks she is uglier than sin!
 
I've got a female GSP and and a male DK. There's a lot of good info in this thread already, so I won't reiterate. I have a few thoughts though.

First, the NAVHDA "Green Book" is a good read, but there are some other good ones to check out too (see below). Some of the techniques in the green book are pretty "high pressure."

I looked at mile high and all points. I would love a rescue...and my husky was a surrender when we got him very young. However I went a breeder for the DK as I really wanted to train a dedicated hunting dog from the ground up.

There is a really great looking GSP/Cattle Dog mix on mile high gsp rescue if anyone is looking

im a lab guy through and through but if i ever get another breed it will be one of them with the awesome beard . Plus they have been impressive in the field. I guess if we are adding pictures im game.
