Down puffy weight

I’m looking for feedback on puffy for glassing in temps under 30 degrees. I’ve read enough threads to make my head spin and beings I’ve never owned one I’m not sure what I need. Before I drop money on one I wanted some feed back.

I currently have 120 merino bottom layer, peloton 97, peloton 240 and a cabelas wind fleece. I don’t care for the wind fleece and plan on replacing it with one of the Kuiu vest(Axis or maybe Kenai). The big question I have is what size and weight for the puffy if I’m wearing those layers, 750? 800? 850? 3-5oz of down? 5+ oz? I see temperature ranges but I didn’t see what layers people are wearing underneath

I just got an SG Grumman on sale and liked it. If the OV would have been out I would have got that instead. It looks like it will be the same weight with more insulation.

My thoughts on the puffy. I would rather pack 2 extra ounces and have to unzip it, than 2 less ounces and be cold.

I packed thin base layer, Sitka Fanatic, and the Grumman. It was freezing in the morning and I was warm. I had my rain coat just in case but never had to wear it to add warmth.

The Rab Electron is great. I also just used their Mythic Alpine on an overnight peakbagging trip. It's got 4.9oz of 900 FP down and weighs 11oz total. Honestly felt very close to the same warmth as the Electron, but much lighter.

I'd recommend against most hunting brand options aside from maybe the Stone Glacier. Warmth/Weight just isn't there.

Thanks everyone, I’ve been looking at the non hunting brands. I seen about the OV but we leave Oct 2nd so I’m going to maybe look into used options for now to get by

I've been testing the new Katabatic Tin Cup for the last year or so.
The color options aren't anything to get excited about, but man is that thing warm and cozy for the weight!
The "Glacier" looks gray on their site, but it's more of a light/sky blue.
Comparable stats to the Gruman (which I've not used in the backcountry, but have handled). The Katabatic uses a 20D Pertex vs 15 in the Gruman, which does give it a little more of a stout feel.

One way to judge warmth is by comparing the product of the fill power and fill weight.

5oz fill weight * 900 fill power = 4500
5oz fill weight * 700 fill power = 3500

Higher fill power gets you the same warmth for less weight:
4oz fill weight * 900 fill power = 3600 (an ounce less and still warmer than the 700 fill power option above)

Of course, higher fill powers come at a premium price!

How long are you sitting glassing without being active? It’s going to depend on how long your sitting for, wind, sun, and other layers and insulation (toque, gloves, puffy pants, wind blocking layers, etc) and how active you are while glassing (moving to check other spots, etc.)

If I’m sitting glassing for long periods (hour+ to multiple hours) I’m going to be cold in something like just the SG Grumman.

I like something with at least 8oz+ of 800+ down in the jacket, plus puffy pants, wind layers, gloves, toque, etc.
