I am going to pick up some game bags for elk. My preference is to debone but I am not sure I am crazy about separating muscles in the field for a Bomb bag. I am open to recommendations on what you guys think the best system would be. Also....I plan to throw a bag (or as many as it would take) in my whitetail day pack. I have a couple of treestands that are decent hikes and I would rather do gutless and pack out. How many bags would it take for about 30-60# (that is my guess with 60 being a big mature buck) of boned meat from a typical eastern Whitetail? I killed a small doe this morning that I could have packed out in a Wal-Mart bag :p so I am just curious.

I use the caribou gear bags and they are legit! Have had the same ones for years. Use them for 2-4 animals a year. Great product!

Along with name brand game bags, I also use extra large white pillow cases.
Just snip a hole in the hem , run some para cord thru and you got some tough, in-expensive game bags.

I also carry 2 game bags in my pack when elk hunting. Thats enough to get meat secured before the first trip out.
Two should be plenty for a WT deer, especially if you knockoff the legs

Here is pic of my 2 elk hanging this year. I used pillow case and Alaskan game bags

Good luck

I bought the "muley" set from caribou this year and was able to fit bone-in rear quarters of my buddy's bull. If you took one quarter bag and one small parts bag, it would be plenty for a whitetail.

It was only my second elk season and second elk I've dealt with on the ground. However, I don't understand the logic of not carrying enough bags for a whole animal. The flies and bees were horrible on both my bull last year and his this time. If we hadn't had bags for all of it, whatever was left out would've been destroyed. Considering a whole set of bags only weighs a few ounces, I think it's worth protecting the meat.

P.S. I just saw the part about Alaskan bags, I also used them last year and the set took up almost half my day pack. I can see why you would carry less. They suck compared to the caribou's.

What do you mean by snipping....do you mean snipping the hem on the pillow case opening and the running paracord through the hem around the opening on the pillow case? Similar to a drawstring on a pair of shorts?

Sweet idea. I can't imagine why a pillow case wouldn't work well? Seems like a no brainer for a cheapskate like me. Maybe these other bags are lighter but I wouldn't think it would be a huge difference.

For the 'newbies' that may not understand the logic of carrying 2 game bags....

Typically I hunt with 1 or 2 other guys. And if we each carry 2 game bags that is plenty for an elk.
Why should everyone carry 4-5 game bags?

Even when I have shot an elk by myself, the 2 game bags are sufficient, as you can put a hind and front in each temporarily and carry the loose meat out on the first trip [ i use my emergency foil tarp for an improvised game bag]

I been doing this elk hunting thing a loooong time, but do what works for you...

Good luck

More on the pillow cases:

They come in 2 sizes - Standard: 20" x 32"; King: 20" x 40"
If you can, get the 300 thread count [stronger]

It depends on how much you hunt. I have the BOMB bags. But I get tired of separating each muscle to fit the elk. This year I borrowed some of the caribou meat on the bone bags. Way more convenient. They were the elk/ caribou size. And like the TAG bags, they are tough as hell. It's nice to have the option of hanging up quarters.
