Don't know what to do with my 5 Colorado points

If you @sndman11 would have read my post a little closer you would have noticed I asked for "ideas" on my elk strategy, not "hand outs" or "charity", nor did any of my post imply any entitlement mentality.
As far as I knew this was a hunting forum where people with common interests discussed hunting related subjects. It must be miserable to let terminology such as "burn" get on your nerves. If you personally don't want to give anyone suggestions or ideas by all means don't do it, that is you're right. I recently joined this forum hoping to escape some of the drama that I have seen for the last several years over on huntalk, guess I was wrong. I hope your day/life gets better.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

With 5 points, on public land, and archery, your choices are practically self selecting. For rifle, same thing. There will be just a few options that fit the criteria. Lay on the geography (close vs far from where you live) and they get smaller. So flip a coin.

After the coin toss, spend a week in the unit before the season opens WALKING the country and glassing (driving around FS roads doesnt count), and youll be on the money opening day.

Lol, coming here to escape drama is like running into a building on fire to cool off. There was tremendous winter kill in that unit and surrounding areas in winter 2022/23. Five points should draw a tag but don't know about the elk numbers.

While I do think @sndmn11 put way too much thought into the word “burn”, I don’t see your post as asking about strategy. Some rambling thoughts that boil down to asking what unit should you go to for a wall hanger. Nobody going to post that.

Practically every unit has wall hangers.

I read fine.

Thinking about burning my 5 points in unit 5 unless someone has a better idea.

Scouting is a great idea and an outstanding strategy. What has yours taught you that would help with your decision?

Statistically most go on a camping trip and may as well have left their weapon at home, and basically get nothing, like setting money on fire. I'd rather say "cash in" my points, because I plan on getting something. It's a subconscious mindset thing

Also it's part of the hipster, online influencer, hunting-bro vocabulary. Like what kind of gear you "run". I "harvested" this animal. "Smoked" him too. I'm "sick for it", and can't wait to get back to the gym and "keep hammering". Check out my new flatbill bro
Show me on the doll where the influencer hurt you....smh..lol

Yes I posted some rambling thoughts but I never asked what unit I should go to for a wall hanger. Read it again, I said "thinking about burning 5 points in unit 5" , unless someone "has a better idea".
Wall hanger meaning I don't want to use up 5 years of points to kill a cow or raghorn.
The fact that I mentioned I have points in multiple states should indicate I'm working on an elk strategy in multiple states over a period of time and don't want to make a big mistake by burning 5 points in colorado unit 5.
Sorry you interpreted that to mean I was asking what unit to shoot a monster bull.

To me if you are driving from out of state, close to far from where you live makes 0 sense. Would be like dudes hunting the front range cause it’s closer to Kansas. It’s not like you are going home at night. I would go to the unit you want to hunt and not worry about an extra hour or three on the drive in or out…

Came from ole “burn yer points” newberg a few years back… trying to light a fire for all this followers to dump points… I’m sure he did the same right? ;)
"Dumping points".......using more points than are needed to draw a specific hunt code.

"Burning points"........applying for a hunt code that you will absolutely draw, so now your points are GONE......i.e used, don't exist anymore, burned.

There can be a big difference though in terms of covering the drive in a single day vs two day drive. For myself if I can cover it in 16 hours I'll do it in 1 day if I'm pretty sure where I want to setup camp, but 18 hours I'm gonna stop and layover somewhere and continue the next day which is a huge PITA and often ends up deviating from the most efficient route.
