Permit secured, flight service booked , hotel reserved, gear sorted out , rounds loaded , rifle dialed in , boots waxed, weight lost. Ready. Two weeks to go Im taking a shower and notice a bulge where ive been hurting for a while. I push on it. It goes back in , I think "great I dont have time for this , two weeks till opening day !" Mind starts racing what in the hell is it? Ignore it, DO NOT TELL THE WIFE! ON the next day wife and I put 60lbs in our packs and go for a 8 mile hike. Its eating at me , its hurting , I tell her. Well she makes me a doctors appointment. Five days later im in the doctors office , after the obligatory "junk fondle" she tells me i have a hernia. I say" I cant right now we are going sheep hunting in like a week". She sends me to a Surgeon two days later. Another "Junk fondling" and he says "yup you have a hernia, and its a big one" . I say "We are going sheep hunting in a week". With my wife sitting there (cause she knows ill lie to her) he says "if your intestines wont go back in when you push on it , you have ten hours to get to a hospital because the blood flow will stop , it will rupture and you will die." I say ill show you pictures when we get back" He shakes his head. A short argument with the wife determined we were going hunting.
We glassed two rams from the bottom , went up one drainage over , crossed the next drainage and crawled to the edge. This sheep was 103 yards below us in his bed . He was not the bigger of the two. I gave up on holding out for" big" years ago so......three flights ,Ten miles , two thousand feet , and by afternoon opening day in the Brooks we were done. Twelve days later I had surgery , two hernias on the same side , largest tares he has ever seen, he liked the photos :)

Haha, there's another thread about people who 'live to hunt sheep'. It seems this guy is ready to risk death to hunt sheep. I think he takes the cake :p. Great ram!

Good call great ram. For future reference if a doctor tells you not to go hunting always get a second opinion until you find a doctor that says go ahead

I started off this morning elk hunting and by this afternoon I was sitting in my doctor's office reading this thread on my cell phone waiting to get something checked out. I almost replied to this post while sitting in the waiting room but I was so freaking nervous I decided to wait til I found out something. Long story short I've got a hernia myself. Doc says I've probably had it for a while and just started noticing it since I've been losing so much weight. Since I'm in no pain whatsoever he told me to go on my moose hunt next week and get it taken care of afterwards. I've dropped 33 pounds this year and have worked hard towards this goal. I told him the last thing I want is to put myself or my partner in danger. He said I could go a long time without any problems but due to my active lifestyle and my job he suggests I get it taken care of sooner. I've told my two hunting partners and will be going to Alaska next week.

wonky good for you...hell yes go! this is what my doc was worried about due to our remote location , and the possibility of weather preventing extraction:
When an organ, such as your intestine, pushes through the abdominal wall, there is a small risk that it could get trapped there. This is known as an incarcerated hernia. If your hernia is trapped outside of the abdominal wall, you won’t be able to push it back into your abdomen and it may feel hard and painful. Contact your doctor right away if you have this condition.

If left untreated, an incarcerated hernia may become strangulated. This means that the hernia is tightly trapped and blood will no longer flow into the tissues. Without a normal blood supply, the trapped tissues may die. A strangulated hernia is not very common but may cause severe pain, nausea, vomiting and even death. A strangulated hernia requires immediate medical attention. Leaving a hernia until this stage means that you will have emergency surgery at your local general hospital and will lose the option of choosing how and when your hernia will be repaired. Obviously not enough to stop someone from going hunting :)
