Just as another last thought… Do you take a tarp BESIDES a tent? If you do..what so you have? What size? What is the weight? What make? Thanks for the ideas and input. I was thinking about adding some Dyneema. It’s only money right! But it’s another 11 OZ or so. This is driving my crazy for my first sheep hunt. As an old moose hunter I’m use to taking the kitchen sink. HELP!!

Tarp for gear or a tarp for meat? For meat, I just pack enough Tyvek or plastic sheeting to lay out a fully deboned critter on. For gear or glassing, I personally wouldn’t bring an extra tarp unless your tent is tiny.

If you mean a tarp to hang over you, I do sometimes. I think mine is the quest from hammok gear in silpoly. Website says it weights 12.8 oz though likely a bit more with the cord. Dyneema ones weigh closer to 5oz and cost closer to $400 than $100.

The can be nice to have to get out of the rain or sun without getting into a tent. Kind of serve a back up function as well. I dont always pack it but it can be nice. Especially if a couple guys are caught in the rain hanging out playing cards on chairs under the tarp is far nicer than trying to hang out together in one of your tents.

Yep. Mine is a tarp/poncho I made. Keep it with me all the time. Handy for rain showers when walking with a pack as well as overnight shelter.

I have a Hypeelite dyneema that I pretty much always take. Has come in handy quite a few times. Its nice to get out of the rain, sun, wind, and just to give a bit more room to a vestibule. This picture was last year in the Chugach, we actually set it up and slept 4 people in the skyscraper and that tarp for two nights.
