Do I really need a softshell?

ive followed this whole thing, still wonder what you use on outer layer than . when cold enough ,and in brush or briars , trees
i see puffy alot but not durable at all, doubt anyone wears there rain jacket for very long.
i like the puffy idea but wouldnt want to tear it up as my pockets are not nearly as deep as most i see/read here.

That is the main reason I picked up the Jetstream Light. I can wear it as a morning and evening layer to take a little chill off. I can put that jacket on over my puffy when it is not raining and not worry about tearing up the puffy jacket. I swapped it out to try because my midweight fleece actually weighs just as much, but the wind goes right through it. I think people are lumping the insulated softshells and the non-insulated together. I don't see a use for the heavier softshell like a Jetstream, but the lighter wind proof softshells could have a place in the back country layering system. Time will tell for me.

Wear my rain jacket in the rough stuff. Hence why I don't wear a soft shell or a lightweight rain coat.
Jackets designed in NZ are alot different to one's from the northern hemisphere
