I pretty much send all my hides out now and only mount them.
I hate fleshing, tanning and shaving. It's a hobby for me but I did go to Joe Meders school. I must say professional taxidermist earn there money the old fashion way.

All the California tanneries ate shut down right now the taxidermist I talked to is basically on hold waiting to get his capes back so I’m glad I went this route

Slowly scratching away at this guy trying to take my time, do a good job and enjoy it while I’m learning. I’ll take more pics today but I’m absolutely shocked with how my ears came out in the end with how bad I ****** them up originally but a whole bunch of super glue and dryer sheets later and they are back in one piece with the earliners

What’s everyone think of the clay work on these ears?? They aren’t set in stone I pulled it all off and put the clay in the freezer. Planning on sewing it up tomorrow

I have always wanted to try to do a deer mount, but I have never tried it. It looks like yours is coming along nice.

I have always wanted to try to do a deer mount, but I have never tried it. It looks like yours is coming along nice.

I was the same way you should totally give it a shot. Pretty simple with any tools you already have and some mild artistic talent. I could give you or anyone else a full list of what you need. The only taxidermy specific tool I bought which wasn’t totally needed anyway was a $7 skife knife. Otherwise all normal stuff I had around. I’m very happy with how it came out

More fine tuning of the eyes this morning then hung him tight against some plywood while he dries so he sits nice and tight against the wall in the future

Sorry for the late reply’s I haven’t been on here much but I really appreciate all the comments. As far as price breakdown I’d say I have $150 into it and some of that I could use again. The big things to buy are the form $65 eyes $15 ears $10. I also bought paint for the airbrush, bondo, modeling clay, and the tanning kit but all of that will last many deer. For hide paste I used clear Alex plus caulk it was like $2 I have have half a tube left for a bathroom project I’m working on

Would you be willing to share what all you needed and any tips? Would you do it again? I'm debating giving it a try on a whitetail I just shot.
